Do you know, the name of this object/shape ?

Post by magicman »

I could probably have rang Mystery Hour with James O'brien on LBC, with this one, but as MissF mention technical drawing Elsewhere, I thought I'd get the answer here.

What is this object called ?

I got all the others in my grandsons play center right, which were a Cube, triangular prism and cylinder.
But when I tried to put a name to this, I couldn't.
I did Google it, but without success.
Archway Prison was not what I was looking for ! You can get from that, what my guess was initially, was I right ?

I’m afraid you’ll not get an answer from me. Last time I saw something like that I was pre-verbal. And Fischer Price never disclosed that kind of information :D

Wow, this made the grey matter ache on a lazy Sunday afternoon. :silent:
The only explanation I could find is Non-Polyhedra (3D shapes which have a curved surface) , hope that helps somewhat?

I don’t know why, but I want to call it an arch block. It’s the solid representation of the internal space that would be created by a triumphal arch or a short barrel-vaulted passage. On a massive scale it would slide into/under the Arc de Triomphe, for example.

I think it would more be described as a composite of two regular 3D shapes. One is a cube and the other is a kind of 3D arch but I don’t know the proper name for that

i'd just call it an arch block. archways aren't just the round part on top. that still includes the straight sides that ground the arch.
the "g" is for Greg...

Well…

The suffix -GON is used for 2D shapes, and -HEDRON for 3D. I won’t bore you with the Greek etymology. So it needs to be a -HEDRON.

My thinking is that we should use a Greek noun root, just as we use Greek numbers - hexa, dodeca &c.

The Greek for “arch” is ΑΨΊΔΑ (APSIDA) from which we get “apse” in ecclesiastical architecture.

How about APSIDAHEDRON? Logical, no?

Yes, that it is
But to be sure and for proper identification we do need 2D orthographic projection of ghostagon

To be a "-hedron" a 3d shape has to comprise only flat sides, I think. So this shape doesn't comply.

I'm not sure it has a formal name. It's a cuboid with half-cylinder attached. The nearest I can find as a colloquial name is a "mailbox" due to the similarity to US residential mailboxes. However, this would be a short one!

It’s called Clyde. At least I think that’s the name of the yellow ghost from Pac Man……
