This year in post count history...

Post by jkbarnes »

With my post count approaching a rather attention getting number for a history teacher, I thought I’d start a new thread. Treating ones post count as a year, has anything interesting or of historical significance happened in that year?

[Edited to add: It has just occurred to me that the idea for this thread places a hard limit of 2020 on usable post counts, limiting the potential contributors.]

This post is #1066 for me...

In 1066, William, Duke of Normandy, invaded England to secure his claim the thrown after the death of Edward the Confessor. William’s defeat of Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings changed the course of English history by reorienting the kingdom towards the continent and setting the stage for hundreds of years of rivalry and conflict with France.

Post 759.....

King Pepin III ("the Short") retake Narbonne from the Muslims, after a 7-year siege. He pushes them back across the Pyrenees, and the Muslims retreat to the Andalusian heartland after 40 years of occupation. The government of the city is assigned to the Visigothic count Miló.

If you are interested in the history of Spain and the Reconquista, you’ll be looking forward to 778.

1492 was pretty good too. The Reconquista was completed. Didn’t some Italian bloke go on a cruise that year as well?

I have to confess to Wikipedia giving me the info, my history is dire, it was one of my two miserable failures a O level, French being an even worse result!

Ah, well 778 was the Battle of Roncesvalles, when Charlemagne retreated over the Pyrenees after being unable to take Zaragoza. He was betrayed by the Basques and his rearguard, led by the paladin Roland, was ambushed in the pass of Roncesvalles. The late 11 century French epic, la Chanson de Roland, was based on these events, albeit quite loosely.

Having studied mediaeval French and Spanish at University, I experienced quite a frisson a few years ago when I walked across the pass in the opposite direction on my way to Santiago to Compostela.

Just realised with this post, mine is easy.

Great Fire Of London.

To be pedantic, I should’ve left this post for a couple of weeks until September 2nd when the fire actually started.

Post 249, seeing as it’s my daughters birthday on Thursday and she was born nearly 15 years ago between 2.45 and 2.50pm, then that seems appropriate. It’s not a year, but it will have to do.

I think the Sun will have become a Red Dwarf and/or we will have been swallowed by a Black Hole, by the time we get to my Post Count Year.

Post 1144

The Basilica of St. Denis just outside of Paris, the church that established and defined the Gothic style, was dedicated in 1144.

Great idea for a thread!

1464: Battle of Hexham in which forces of the House of York (King Edward IV) crushed the army of the House of Lancaster (Henry VI) and executed the Lancastrian leadership (though Henry was kept well out of it) to bring a 5 year hiatus in the Wars of the Roses.
