British Watchmakers Day 25 - 'Mission to Maidenhead'
Hi All,
I'm looking forward to seeing those of you who are attending British Watchmakers Day in London on Saturday. I'll be alongside Mike, Peter, Sarah, and a few more of my colleagues at our booth.
For those who aren't able to join us, here are a few iPhone shots of the 'Mission to Maidenhead'. We had a lot of fun with this one!
It's largely similar to the new 37mm we know and love but with several notable additions. Firstly, we have the inclusion of a Union Jack, this time in
printed clear lacquer, which looks as though it's suspended in mid-air, between the dial and box domed crystal. We then have the spaceman graphic,
hand drawn by Mr Brackfield, a bright red seconds hand, and a custom strap with red stitching.
As of 2025, 24 astronauts have landed on the moon. Standing just a few millimetres tall, the astronaut on the Mission to Maidenhead is the 25th,
explaining why 25 individually numbered pieces will be available.

I'll be there and look forward to seeing you, Patrick.
How will we be able to buy one? First come, first served or name in the hat as last year?

Hi Guy, looking forward to seeing you too.
Slightly different to last year - they'll be sold on a first-come, first-served basis from our booth, with 12 pieces available in the morning session and 13 in the afternoon.

So they'll probably all be sold, within a few minutes of the doors opening, to scalpers who've been prepared to queue since silly o'clock.

You know if a real CW foot soldier/fanboy - as opposed to some uber-trendy youtube watch reviewer - was to be enabled to be in exactly the right place at exactly the right time in order to secure one of these it would simply raise my respect for the brand to an even higher level: just saying

You know there have only been 12 astronauts who have walked on the moon. Even if you include the astronauts that stayed in the command modules, that would only be 18. I'm not sure where the 24 comes from.
I really like the watch. I'm hoping to make it on Saturday, if my knee holds up, so I can take a closer look then. Hopefully, see you then.
Cheers,
Steve

Completely daft mistake but I have a theory...welshlad wrote: ↑ Hi Patrick,

12 landers + 6 CMPs = 18
However, let's add in the missions that didn't land and you get another six.
Apollo 8: Borman, Lovell and Anders
Apollo 10: Stafford (discount Young and Cernan who both commanded later landing missions)
Apollo 13: Haise and Swigert (discount Lovell on his 2nd mission)
So...24 astronauts flew TO the moon, but only 12 landed. Ask the forum next time, CW...
Or DYR of course.

Re: British Watchmakers Day 25 - 'Mission to Maidenhead'
As an aside I have been fortunate to have met two of the astronauts who walked on the moon. One was James Irwin (Apollo 15) a long time ago when I was at secondary school and the other was Charlie Duke (Apollo 16 and CapCom for the Apollo 11 moon landing).

Re: British Watchmakers Day 25 - 'Mission to Maidenhead'

I'm sure you're correct AVO and that the question "How many people have been to the Moon?" was the one that was put into Google instead of "How many people have walked on the Moon?"
To be fair I'm not sure that statistical slip-up is one that's appeared on much if any official marketing material, though I did find one reference in this WatchPro article: "This tiny but meaningful detail marks the 25th astronaut on the moon, reflecting the limited production of just 25 pieces."

^^^ I'm not sure that you can say someone has been to the Moon if they set off but don't actually get there. Pedantic or accurate? You choose.

@exHowfener I didn't say whether they were right, only what they may have Googled
Nevertheless... let me rephrase as "How many people have either walked on the Moon or been to within 0.001 lunar distance of its surface?"

Re: British Watchmakers Day 25 - 'Mission to Maidenhead'
Whilst we can conjecture as to how CW came to their figure, what is interesting is that 25 is clearly the minimum order for a "bespoke" watch whether it's an external customer or CW themselves.

Re: British Watchmakers Day 25 - 'Mission to Maidenhead'
They did fly round the moon though, so I’d argue that counts.exHowfener wrote: ↑Wed Mar 05, 2025 6:03 pm ^^^ I'm not sure that you can say someone has been to the Moon if they set off but don't actually get there. Pedantic or accurate? You choose.
At the risk of going off topic even further. If anyone isn’t already aware of this then I’d highly recommend the BBC world service podcast series 13 minutes to the moon. Series one is about the moon landing but also covers the history and development of the Apollo space program. Series two is all about Apollo 13. Both are well worth listening to.

Iain’s Law: Any discussion on the Christopher Ward forum, irrespective of the thread title or subject matter, will eventually lead to someone mentioning the Bel Canto if the thread continues for long enough.
