Removing Links from a Tissot Bracelet

Post by jkbarnes »

My wife’s Tissot has arrived. I’m hoping for some guidance in removing links to adjust the bracelet for her.

Im assuming this is pin and collar? I tried pushing the pins out in the direction of the arrows, but they didn’t budge. To be honest, I didn’t put a ton of pressure behind it because I don’t want to damage anything. I’d gladly pay a jeweler to adjust rather than risk anything.

Thoughts or suggestions?

I doubt they are thread locked. What tool are you using? I find it hard to get them back in, but not hard to get them out.

With the arrows, it will be some sort of pin system. Either pin & collar, or cotter pins. With a pin press tool, the pins should move easily.

I’d bet it’s probably cotter pin. Either way, a little tap wouldn’t hurt. Or a pin press if you have one :D

My pin press is cheap, so not good at all on such small and delicate links. I’ve given them a pound with a hammer, and I’m reluctant to pound harder (see reference to small and delicate links).

I’m going to take it to a jeweler.

@jkbarnes I think that is the best thing to do. No point in ruining the watch. I have never dared to resize a bracelet.

I’m not sure I could manage being like that. My routine with a new watch which is on a bracelet goes something like this.

1. Size to how I think it should be
2. About an hour later wonder if it’s too tight so add another link/half link
3. Realise I was wrong so size it back
4. No I was definitely right to add that link
5. I wonder if I move one link to the other side, will the clasp fit better
6. No, best to move it back
7. Then again.....
8. Actually I was right first time, let’s put it all back and take that link out, but at least I now know other bracelet settings don’t work
9. Live happily ever after.

I think if I had to pay a jeweller every time it would cost me more than the watch.

I've actual got a few inexpensive pin presses. I bought about 20 tips for a few pounds as I always seem to bend 1 or 2 when resizing a bracelet.

If it is not a cotter pin, but is a pin/collar system, it may be your pin is too big. Meaning the pin is trying to push the collar instead of the pin itself. If you have given it a good whack the pin should move. Try a smaller diameter pin.

We dropped it off at a jewelers tonight. I think the $30 will be money will spend in this case.

While there, I snapped a pic of a few Rolex they had on display. When I inquired about wait list I was told they were all pre-owned, and I could go home with one this very day if I wanted!

Suggestions Andrew? A photo which shows clearly the ends of whatever is holding the links together would be ace

I'm kinda wondering whether this watch is brand spankers or preowned only because all I can make out is possibly the split end of one cotter pin in the fourth hole from the left which would suggest that maybe the cotter pins have been pushed in contrary to the arrows on the links?

Honestly I'm waiting to hear the outcome.

Definitely brand new and advertised as such. I think what you’re seeing is a consequence of a poor photograph.

I’ve dropped the watch off at a jeweler to be sized. I think it will be money well spent.

When you go back to pick it up make sure to take a spare $10K to pick up that Sub in the window!

Temptation? Yes. Actionable? No.

My wife picks up the watch today, so hopefully some pics will be forthcoming.
