Another virtue signaling company. Just what the world needs. Stop mining of anything to do with any of the materials in their watches. Now that's a start...but we know that ain't gonna happen.

Besides, how extreme could we be without those damn trona mines!!!

On dragons den this week, a guy came in said that chewing gum contained a lot of non bio degradable plastic

He was trying to sell a plant based alternative that cost nearly 3 times as much, but didn't get a taker. Plastic in gum. Who knew? I won't be chewing gum again.

I am not bothered about exotic leathers. I am ok with using leather as a by product.

I've seen recycling bins for used chewing gum in Manchester.

I am mot going to stop wearing leather shoes & boots, nor eating meat so it would be odd to stop wearing leather watch straps. I don't particularly like 'exotic' materials that come from animals who are farmed just for their skin, and I don't buy them, bit I don't throw stones at people who do.
While several people have pointed out that leather is a by-product of the meat industry, it's just as accurate to say that it is a by-product of the dairy industry - as is a lot of meat.
I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left

Flavor the leather, chewing leather? Spearmint?

No. If it's a sustainable by product then I'd continue to wear leather watch straps. That said many of my straps are steel, rubber and other synthetic products.

Every little helps. :)

On the basis that we now tend to only eat meat at the weekends, plus fish twice a week and vegetarian on other days I may well adopt a similar process in my watch wearing habits.

Something dressy on finest leather for the weekend. A selection of dive, sports, GMT, chronographs, on a bracelet the rest of the time.

As to the brand featured in the article, I very much doubt they are missing out on potential customers amongst any of us who have posted in this thread.

Only have two watches on leather straps so it’s no big deal for me, shoes on the other hand need to be leather.

I think we could all benefit from looking for and appreciating merits in arguments from viewpoints other than our own. Something obviously in short supply these days. And no, you don’t have to have estrogen to do so.

If the world’s population keeps increasing at this exponential rate, in the coming decades the amount of leather available vs. the demand could very well shift. Leather might not be affordable as a strap material anymore. I’m pretty sure we’d all survive if that were to happen.

All that said, I won’t stop buying leather. Or big juicy steaks. But I appreciate the point the brand is making.

I think this pretty much sums up the way I feel about it too, Alex.

Among my friends are a vegan couple, and a couple who follow Islam. We haven’t entertained much over the last 18 months, for obvious reasons, but when we do I enjoy the fantastic food they offer and I certainly don’t complain because the vegans don’t offer meat or animal products, and the Muslims don’t offer alcohol or foods which are taboo to them. When I have entertained them, out of respect I have prepared things which I know they will eat drink and I have eaten and drunk the same.

I come from a Roman Catholic family (don’t worry, I’m not discussing theology, just stating a fact!) and as a teenager I used to get very snotty because my mother wouldn’t cook anything but fish on Fridays in Lent. Stupid really, I love fish!

Qué será… :D

If the world's population does keep increasing, and it seems almost inevitable, then I'm not sure that the best use for plants will be making watch straps - they may be needed for food.

Right on… aren’t the tide straps from CW made from recycled ocean plastic? Seems like one of the best alternatives.
