Re: Advice on saving for a big purchase

I found looking at the non CW of the day thread daily very useful (over a number of years) in helping to crystallise my likes and dislikes about all aspects of watches. Many were specific: I do not like blobs for hour markers for example, some were more personal and perhaps idiosyncratic: I do not l...

Re: The Wonderful World of English

I think it was in The Lost Continent that an American lady says to Bill Bryson: 'you sure do speak good English for a foreigner.'

Re: The Wonderful World of English

Just to throw in a further usage, I remember Derby County's pitch in the 1970s being desribed as being a pudding. Particularly after a bad January.

You wouldn't want it after your tea though.

Re: The Wonderful World of English

Milk first!
I suspect there are endless variations on how to make a cup of tea!

And that is just in England.

Re: The Wonderful World of English

A food item that once got me into trouble is the humble bread roll. I come from an area in the midlands known as the Black Country where the item, if crusty, is familiarly known as a 'cob'. One night I was in a pub near London after a football match and I saw a display of filled bread rolls behind t...

Well, I guess their magnificent support are a safer bet than their neighbours who routinely bring disgrace and shame to the city. Such as? You are kidding, right? Not from Liverpool. Mot a Liverpool supporter. And no, i'm not kidding. Please, as already asked for, supply just one example. I really ...

Re: Christopher Ward becomes Everton's Official Global Timing Partner

From the CW home page "Christopher Ward and Everton football club are perfect partners in time." Everton last won something 27 years ago. https://lastwonatrophy.co.uk/everton/ Well, I guess their magnificent support are a safer bet than their neighbours who routinely bring disgrace and sh...

Re: Your thoughts on history class

History has become increasingly central to my reading and general interests. At school it was dry and decontextualised: it passed me by. As a teacher of English (eventually, after a few false starts) i became fascinated in the history of englishes and have read a range of books on some of the differ...

Re: Can you help with some research, please?

I have no specific recollection of ancient Egypt being taught at primary school. I do remember the 1972 exhibition. I have vivid memories of colour photographs being produced which were both striking and uncommon for the time. The Ten Commandments is a film Ihave watched many times on TV. The animat...

Re: Food and drink you miss when you’re away?

My take is probably at variance with most on here. As a vegetarian (almost for forty years) my experiences have been markedly different. I will get the controversial opinion out of the way to start: the worst meals I have had have all been in France. This is the worst country in Europe for vegetaria...

Re: C9 5-Day Small Second - CW’s “Marine Chronometer”

I enjoyed reading this. It struck me as I read it that it was ( big subjective comment alert) a better piece of writing than the example of your travel writing presented fairly recently. Or, I just enjoyed this piece more. It led me to imagine a piece that described a journey from the east of Englan...

Just a footnote to the Tango ads. The voiceover at the end ' you know when...' was supplied by the late Gil Scott Heron. I still find this quite astonishing.

Re: Happy birthday Martin!

How very kind. It is particularly welcome as we were due to land in Tenerife last evening for a week of sunshine but I tested positive for 'you know what' on Friday. However, life does usually find a way to help out and I discovered on Sunday I am due to become a grandfather in October for the first...
