C65 AMGT LE Wonkiness

Post by jkbarnes »

I’ve had an interesting experience with my C65 AMGT LE over the past few days and need some advice on how to proceed.

A few days ago I went to the watch box to grab a watch and noticed the AMGT was off by about 10 minutes. When I’d worn if the day before, the time was correct, but now it had lost 10 minutes sitting in the watch box overnight (it might have been sitting a whole day; I can’t say for sure the last time I’d worn it). Odd. I reset the time and would keep an eye on it.

Fast forward a few days to last night. I looked in the watch box to see the counters were counting! Odd again because it had been sitting in the watch box untouched. What was more odd was that the counters were not advancing in any consistent way - the second hand might move fast then slow down a bit. Pushing the buttons did nothing. Pulling the crown out to try to rest the counter hands apparently did nothing at first and definitely not consistently.

The long and the short of it is that I eventually managed to reset all the hands to zero. When I get home today I’ll see if anything else funky has happened.

Has any experienced anything similar with a quartz chrono? I can’t imagine this behavior is an indicator of a dying battery, as it’s really oddball behavior. I’m assuming I need to contact CW about sending this in for warranty work.

Your thoughts?

I might be a bit weirded out by that. But I’d put it down to end-of-battery and send it for a service anyway so I didn’t have to think about it

What’s the typical life expectancy with a battery with a watch like this? It’s only 2 years old, and I’ve hardly used the timing functions over that period.

I am seeing 5-6 years on that movement. It isn't out of the realm of possibility to get a lemon battery though.

Google “ The Dr. Wanda Pratnicka Center”

She can do exorcisms REMOTELY!

Though the cost is more than what the watch cost.

Up to you. I might try a battery change first. Let me know how it goes.

Would this type of behavior be consistent with a dying battery?

Did they state a 72 month power reserve so would expect any battery lasting a minimum of 3 years?

Hopefully they can identify the issue over email but would likely have to go back which is frustrating when it is international.

It sounds like a battery change would be the first port of call. I'm not sure if you can have a 3rd party take the watch back off to change a battery without invalidating the CW warranty. If that's possible it would save you sending it back to Maidenhead. If that does invalidate the warranty then it sounds like it has to go back, either way.

It could be. It is my understanding the ETA quartz chronograph movements don't have a dedicated low power indicator. Some watches will make the second hand start skipping seconds (it will jump in 4 sec increments for example) to let you know the battery is low. Without this indicator the watch could start acting very funky.

Well the watch looks completely DOA now. Do I assume it’s a battery issue and initiate the return ticket for a new battery or should I contact CW about a potential warranty issue. Assuming it’s just a battery issue, it needs to be changed by CW to maintain the warranty, correct? Any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

^^^^ Just email CW (repairs@. ........) and tell them like it is. Don't assume that it's 'just a battery'.

They'll get back to you and initiate a return.
