The film about teaching that resonates with me the most is Dead Poet’s Society, the first half at least. It seems to capture perfectly the challenge in teaching right now - trying to encourage critical & independent thinking and creativity in a world that demands conformity and prepackaged responses.JAFO wrote: ↑Mon Jun 06, 2022 2:51 pm ^^^
Films about teaching.
I really enjoyed The Browning Version. I thought Albert Finney was very good in that. Goodbye Mr Chips is perhaps overly sentimental, but the fairly recent Martin Clunes version was very watchable. I just researched Wikipedia, and realised that the plots of earlier versions were each somewhat different. There's also To Sir With Love with Sidney Poitier. I am sure there are many more, often sport related.

Re: The Non-Curmudgeons Corner
This story kind of sums up teaching for me. I have told it on here before, and I used to use it in school assemblies every couple of years; the older kids all knew it off by heart.
A tourist was walking along a beautiful beach at sunset, in a very high-class island resort. The beach was deserted except for one distant figure who appeared to stop every few seconds, bend down and throw something into the ocean. As the figure got nearer the tourist realised it was a local person, quite shabbily dressed.
"What are you doing?" asked the tourist.
"Every night I walk along this beach and pick up the starfish that get stranded when the tide goes out. There are hundreds of them. I throw them back into the ocean so they don't die."
"That's very kind," said the tourist, "but there are dozens of beaches on this one island alone; what about all the starfish on those beaches? And then there are all the other islands. What you are doing is good, but you can't possibly make a difference."
The local thought for a moment, then picked up a starfish, threw it into the ocean and smiled at the tourist.
"Made a difference to that one, didn't I?"

That’s a wonderful story, Steve. I’ll be sharing it moving forward. We all need this as a reminder every now and then.Amor Vincit Omnia wrote: ↑Mon Jun 06, 2022 4:51 pmThis story kind of sums up teaching for me. That’s a lovely story; I’m gonna try committing that to my patchy memory. Not sure when I’ll get to recount it.

That feeling of relief, when you get the news that, a watch you’ve carefully wrapped and posted, has arrived safely and the purchaser is happy!

A member of staff is leaving us and moving on to a promotion elsewhere. I initially recruited them and have helped mentor them over the years. I moved out of the department myself about 3 years ago but still met up regularly to offer guidance and support in developing themselves professionally.
I’ve just been given this Eden Project fridge magnet by them. They told me that one of the individual trees represents them, struggling to stand out from all the others. I’m represented by the dome who has provided shelter and help to all the trees to allow them to grow and develop and reach their full potential. They said they wouldn’t have got the new job of it hadn’t been for my help over the years.
The sentiment behind this means a lot and it’s very rewarding to know you make a difference to others along the way.

Not the tempestuous tropical zone.
[later edit. on reflection, maybe that is the tropical zone!]

Maybe this Hungary football team will be like the 50s team, best in the world, although I know they missed out on this world cup.
Re: The Non-Curmudgeons Corner
Did my good deed for the day yesterday afternoon. Whilst out walking yesterday, we passed a group of six young women, who were sitting on the ground, looking hot and fed up.
One of them asked if we were local and knew the area. No said Mrs nbg, but he (pointing at me) hopefully knows where we are.
Looked at their map and told them exactly where we were and the path they needed to take, based on where they said they needed to head to. The map had been marked up with their intended route, together with the time they were supposed to be at each point.
Turns out they were doing their Duke of Edinburgh Silver award and were already about an hour and a half behind schedule.

Thanks to the amazing western diet and some genetic predispositions, my cholesterol numbers were higher than grey market markup on a Submariner. Got a new doctor, ate a little better, took some meds, and am back down to healthy levels in under 9 months.
Re: The Non-Curmudgeons Corner
Another university open day with my daughter today. Sadly it was too busy to allow two parents to accompany their mini adult on the accommodation tour, which was actually a 90 minute trip out.
As luck would have it, a 20 minute walk towards the city centre led me right to a rather excellent record fair which helped pass the time. Just cooking our tea with all my new vinyl playing a little too loud in the background.
