I was more interested in the justification for your choice of Ellis than in your right to discuss it, which was never in question.sea_urchin wrote: ↑Mon May 02, 2022 10:26 am Isn't the fact that this is the biggest talking point re CW on this and every other watch forum not justification enough?
I’m not shouting you down, I just want to hear why you think that.

Ah, so it looks like when the 3 founders got together a decision was made to use one of their names as the brand name, out of the 3 names, Christopher Ward, Mike France and Peter Ellis, I think Ellis has the most international appeal. There is no more to my justification than thatAmor Vincit Omnia wrote: ↑Mon May 02, 2022 10:34 amI was more interested in the justification for your choice of Ellis than in your right to discuss it, which was never in question.sea_urchin wrote: ↑Mon May 02, 2022 10:26 am Isn't the fact that this is the biggest talking point re CW on this and every other watch forum not justification enough?

They could have of course just chosen a brand name outwith their own names, and come up with a nostalgic story like Bremont did.
'Nick and Giles were flying across France in a 1930's biplane when bad weather hit. They were forced to make an emergency landing in a pea field belonging to a French farmer, Antoine Bremont, a former wartime pilot with a love for restoring vintage machinery and carriage clocks.'
But iirc and someone here can verify, the CW idea came up whilst the 3 of them were on a boat, maybe they could have named it after the river/lake they were on.

It was the Thames and I have already linked the story on this thread once this morning. See previous page. Re: Logo only on some existing CW models.
Obviously there has been lots of discussion and opinions about the name, logo and rebranding.
From reading a lot of posts on this Forum many people, when talking about the company and the watches, abbreviate the name down to just CW. As there’s the thought that they want to move away from the actual name, does a compromise of CW and the “Swish” logo on the front represent an alternative compromise?

Re: Logo only on some existing CW models.
I mean, if it was unwise (shortsighted?) in hindsight to choose Christopher Ward's name as the brand, then the same reasoning should apply to the names of the other founders, because you never know if one day they might want to pull out as well.
But it's easy for us to look back and second guess what they should have done as a fledgling business.
For myself, I am able to separate Christopher Ward watches (ie the brand recognition and goodwill, because the watches are still Christopher Ward watches) from the man. And I'm pretty chill about all the incarnations of the logo.

Here's a thought though - what's to say they wouldn't have started with a PE logo then switched up the font and gone with the full name then switched font again and moved it to 9 before ditching the text for some flags? Better name or not there would still have been just as much discussion and discontent about the brandingsea_urchin wrote: ↑Mon May 02, 2022 10:45 amout of the 3 names, Christopher Ward, Mike France and Peter Ellis, I think Ellis has the most international appeal. ^^^ PE logo? Interesting connotations there.

Lots of great names on watches but typically they are on there to show of the watchmakers skills, ie Dournbluth, Langhe, Journe, Blancpain etc, in the case of CW they choose a name because it was, and I quote MF, 'We called it Christopher Ward. It seemed the most quintessentially English name of the three of us.'

Still would like a Super Compressor but the reason I cancelled was the pre order date was pushed back well into May. I guess to accommodate the new face and rotor perhaps…. Things are changing!
Ok, I do quite like this, seems to work well on the Super Compressor imho.

Yes, it's winning me round too I have to say. It seems a very gradual roll out of the new logo; it's on the ocean blue version but not the dark blue...as of yet. It's also a little confusing looking at the photos in the watch description, some are text on dial, some logo only. In fact, looking through the Aquitaine range they're growing on me too. Particularly like the white sand and green on the bracelet. Sometimes you just have to allow something new time to bed n.

Re: Logo only on some existing CW models.
Yeah they probably need to have a little more consistency around the photos. I imagine now that when something goes out of stock and then comes back in, it will have the logo only. In the random rob video I am sure the rotor was black as well….strapline wrote: ↑Sat May 07, 2022 7:42 am ^^ ^^

Quick data point for those of you who have strong feelings either way*. I ordered a Sealander GMT on 25/04, it arrived today and it has the words Christopher and Ward on the watch face.
* I'm a tad nonplussed that people do get a bit passionate about this.

Re: Logo only on some existing CW models.
This morning as is my habit, I checked out an Oracle of Time post with a review of Raymond Weil’s new Freelancer Chronograph model in green. I could not help but notice the company word mark, Raymond Weil, at 12 with Geneve positioned under that. Seems like a similar situation to Christopher Ward as that is not a short name. It did make me wonder if some of their customers get upset with it being there? Additionally, Raymond Weil with Geneve under it was repeated on the back case rotor. I thought the watch was attractive & didn’t mind the name placement on the dial. Same goes for the JS Watch Co. that I looked at tonight with Reykjavik underneath JS Watch Co. My point being that most reputable watch companies put their name on the front of their watches. There will be those that think otherwise but I consider using just the two flag logo a marketing mistake. Reading the Loupe magazine tells me the company is committed to this change going forward but sales numbers may tell them otherwise. Time will tell.

Re: Logo only on some existing CW models.
How many times has anyone seen a watch on someone’s wrist from across the room and identified it from the name in the dial?
I’ve seen many a Seamaster and always spot them by the bracelet design.
I once picked out a speedmaster by the case shape and the bezel.
I saw a CW trident but noticed the hybrid strap.
Any Rolex I have seen I have identified by the cyclops in conjunction with the logo on the bracelet clasp, not the name on the watch face.
Without my glasses I cant read the text on my own watch, never mind someone else’s from 20 feet away.
Maybe we are reading too much into the illusion that by taking the very small Christopher Ward writing off a dial, it will result in no one knowing what we are wearing. I’d argue no one will know with it there anyway. Our watch would be identified by those in the know for other reasons.

Iain’s Law: Any discussion on the Christopher Ward forum, irrespective of the thread title or subject matter, will eventually lead to someone mentioning the Bel Canto if the thread continues for long enough.
