My 1st Mechanical Watch

Post by Qubo »

With my dad moving to a care home we had to clear out the house where I grew up. What a surprise that I came across my 1st watch that I got when I think I was 10 - sort of cushion case diver, manual wind, small seconds, mineral domed crystal and bi-directional (frictional) bezel. It was 10+ minutes fast per day (magnetic for sure) and winding was shifting gears not using the clutch. Had it serviced and it's in good health again. It was on one of those expanding bracelets that obviously no linger fits my wrist so for now put it on a leather strap. Thinking of putting it on a Milanese bracelet - we'll play with it. I remember getting it from a department store 40+ years ago and I think the brand is likely something generic from Germany or France. The looks have the GO box ticked

The exploration into it's history starts now. So whenever I decide to leave this earth, my kids will have all Dad's watches - the 1st and last.

Start with France. The name means anchor in French and “antichoc” means shockproof.

Thats really cool! To be able to book-end a collection is a cool thing.
Taking the watch just on its own I rather like its looks!
Congrats on a great re-discovery!!!

What a wonderful story and a nice looking watch - it merits being worn and enjoyed independent of the story!

I hope your father will be comfortable in his new home and you enjoy reconnecting with your lovely watch. I believe the watch was made by a Swiss brand predominately for a German market.

Wow, a mechanical watch as a ten year old; I'm pretty sure all mine were quartz. It looks to be in very good condition, look at that shine on the case flanks. As a watch to hand on to your own kids it'll always have a very special provenance. What a find.

That, of course, would depend to some extent on how old you are. I’m 64, and bought my first quartz watch age 20 in 1977. I must have had mechanical watches in my childhood and teens, but I can’t remember anything about them. I THINK my first one was a Timex, and I was probably about 8. I remember my older cousin getting a Seiko automatic for his 16th birthday. His kid brother and I (we are the same age) were dead jealous.

What a great find. That's a pretty timeless design, too. Similar dial to this current watch from Momentum watch:

Best wishes for your father in his new environment.

The pictures of your watch indicate that you took very good care of your watch.
