Had a grand time yesterday playing a beautiful course I hadn't played in about 15 years. Excellent condition for this time of year. Only issue, although the grounds crew was trying to keep up was the autumn leaves. It did make finding a ball very challenging at times.

We played another scramble and ended all even including shooting even par for each team. A couple of exceptional shots were had on both sides. My opponent drove a short par 4 and was pin high about leaving a 6 foot putt for eagle. Unfortunately he lipped the hole and made birdie.

Another special moment was on a 195 yard par 3. Both teams on the green in 1. My team has a double breaking putt downhill about 35 feet away. Our opponents have an uphill putt breaking left about 50 feet away. The opponents analyze the putt, pick their spot and try to judge the pace. We hear them say " that should get us within 3 feet". They line it up and Player 1 makes a smooth stroke perfectly hit and it drops into the hole. A terrific shot. For fun, player 2 decides to take the shot as well. Doesn't he do the same thing!!

Now it is our turn. My partner and I have been looking at our proposed track and studying the double downhill break. I go first. Nothing to lose at this point so I go for the hole. As if in slow motion the ball starts straight on chosen line while picking up speed. First breaking right hitting our chosen point and then proceeding to hit the next break point now heading left. I was a bit concerned if the pace was enough at this point, but it it keeps going and hits the hole dead center!! My partner has to try the shot as well. No way we could walk away after what has just happened. He lines it up Makes a perfect stroke, but with a touch more speed. All looks good, but the touch more speed changes the break points. No matter.. the ball reaches the hole circles about 1 1/2 turns ad drops in. Spectacular!!

What are the odds of 4 long and difficult putts like that dropping in. Now that was fun!

Kip, That's amazing for 4 putts of distance to drop like that. Must have been fun seeing it and no doubt would have lifted everybody's spirit for a while.

The odds of a 1 putt from the PGA tour website - 35 feet 5%, 50 feet 3%. To get overall probability 5% x 5% x 3% x 3% = 0.000225% or 1 in 444,444.44

These odds are for PGA tour professionals who will be superior putters however you could argue that's offset by the fact two of you got an idea of the line from your partner's putts.

Whatever way you look at it, an amazing and unique situation!

It certainly was a good buzz. That hole made the day for all of us. Never seen anything like it let alone be part of that experience.

I wish I had the foresight to get a video, but who would ever think of that on the golf course.

Not having picked up a club for over a month, I went back on the range on Monday and again yesterday morning, followed by a full 18 yesterday afternoon on a lovely course. Still very erratic, mainly off the tee, but I did manage a few bogeys and a par among the disasters, and I just have to tell myself that it’s still only three months since I started playing again after a 30 year gap. Back feels a bit sore today so I’m going to the gym to do some light stretching stuff, swim a bit and probably spend a good half hour in and out of the sauna.

Such a psychological game, isn’t it? Even when you’re only really playing against the course and yourself. You play a decent, sensible tee shot on a par-4, placing you nicely down the fairway. Then on the next hole, which is a par-5, instead of playing a similar shot you try to hit the cover of the ball and end up slicing into the trees 120 yards away. Having laid up short of a water hazard, you leave yourself with a 70 yard carry which should be a nice little flick, and your ball ends up in the drink! you have a little 30 yarder over a greenside bunker onto a large green – should make it every time, but when you have to play the damn shot for real you thin it and it goes straight across the green into another bunker on the other side.

One of my friends was hitting her fairway woods beautifully for 2/3 of the round, topped one on the 12th and didn’t hit another decent shot for the rest of the round! All in the mind.

I’ve stopped telling myself that I need to try to hit greens in regulation. If I can be on in three on a par-4, or four on the par-5, then at least I have a chance to make bogey, which is quite acceptable at the moment.

Well done Steve and an excellent attitude toward the game.

Keep in mind that being a bogey golfer actually means you are doing better than most other recreational golfers. According to various studies, the majority of people who take up golf never break 100, and only a small percentage of those who play golf ever score lower than 90.

Here is an interesting chart that may guide you or give you some added goals. Whatever your goals...enjoy the game.

Unfortunately for me, due to a recent fall and back injury, My golf season is done. :( I can only start prepping for the next season that will hopefully begin in March. Perhaps I can play some indoor golf after the first of the year to ease back into things.

In the meantime, I will enjoy following the adventures of those still playing.

Steve,
You could have saved yourself months of stress if you had read what I wrote on this subject in June .......

"As an alternative maybe try a round playing each hole plus your handicap ? So if your handicap is 18 play each hole 1 stroke over what the card says, i.e consider a par 4 as a par 5. It reduces the self created pressure when we push ourselves to score each hole to the card par. As confidence and skill grows the pressure lessens and more actual pars should happen but even if you play to your handicap it's 36 points, a decent score."

You should have read and listened to a fellow hacker of many years that's now beginning not to place pressure on himself and is playing and scoring better than the first half of this year.

An interesting chart that gives some stats on GIR.

For our level of golf I think we could easily be lead the wrong way by GIR stats as these would exclude those shots that end up just off the green but that still give a good opportunity for a 1 putt. This off the green putt would then also skew any "number of putts" stats as they only include putts made when on the green (I believe).

Any of our golfing members experienced this:-

I don’t normally read this thread, but thought you may enjoy it.

Surprisingly I gave up golf when I retired, (figure that one out!) I even have a golf related license plate on my car. 50th birthday present from my wife many years ago.

You are perfectly correct, Mick, but I guess we’re all a little stubborn and competitive at times.

Decent session yesterday. I went to the Toptracer range. This time I went with a plan to narrow the corridor into which I was hitting, and following advice from an experienced playing partner last week I shortened my backswing and tried to slow everything down. Although a little bit down on average distance with each club, I was definitely hitting a much higher proportion of clean straight shots. Fewer slices, tops and shanks.

Thread has gone quiet.

Very good session at the range today. I wanted to work on my short game and spent the session practising those shots between about 60 and 100 yards that you want to land on the green every time. A few stray shots, but overall consistency was very pleasing.

I finished up hitting 20 balls at a 60 yard flag using the lob wedge. All shots within 53-66 yards and average line was 1 foot offline (according to Toptracer diagnostics)

^^^Thats impressive Steve !

I love the lob wedge, it's one of my better performers.

I hit my best shot ever on Saturday.
A 175 yard uphill shot over 2 bunkers onto a narrow green. With my least favourite club (6 iron) put it 3ft from the flag, missed the putt though !

Regards Steve
