It’s fantastic! He’s essentially connecting various stages in world history to drinks that played a significant role in that period: beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and Coca-Cola. It’s got enough legitimate history to not be fluff but not so much as to be academic. Highly recommend!

You made me realise I bought this book a while ago on my kindle and haven’t got around to reading it, I totally forgot!!

I’m on holiday at the moment so have plenty of time.

Sounds so interesting, I’ve just ordered a copy from eBay.

Is anyone familiar with this book - Pastoral Song: A Farmer’s Journey by James Rebanks. I just read this linked article and find this really intriguing in a number of ways. He’s an English farmer describing the generational transformation of how his family has farmed their land. He starts with the traditions he learned from his grandfather, the “progress” introduced by his father, and his efforts to return to more traditional practices. I think I’m going to pick it up.

I read most books on Kindle these days, so no nice photos of a book.

Currently reading "Legionnaire" by Simon Murray. Being ex-Army myself, some of it is familiar but it's fair to say that everything is way more extreme than anything I personally experienced. His life following military service is pretty amazing too.

Just finished this; what an interesting character. Have grown to really love his music. Has been described as ‘music to cut your wrists by’, which I think is a terrible disservice. I even thought about using one of his more famous lyrics for my signature, ‘I ache in the places where I used to play.’

*apologies for the sideways picture.

Just coming to the end of this.

Yes, I know. High Fantasy. Sword and Sorcery. Dragons. Magic jewels. Save the world…blah-blah-blah.

But this one is…a bit different. It has challenged my perceptions of the genre. I shall say no more!

Reading this again and thinking I am glad that our youngest daughter and son-in-law restrict themselves to bouldering and sport climbing and have shown no interest in Alpinism.

Not reading anything just now, very occupied with work. But I've seen an article on Mel Brooks memoir, and think I'll get that. I've really enjoyed his films, so it should be good.

I have lined up both of these to take to Cyprus for Christmas and New Year. Both are relevant to the research I am doing for a book about the island, and it will be nice to do some reading around the subject “on location”.

This was a recommendation from the Billy Connolly post Xmas programme about his life in Florida (incidental rather than relevant comment). I can't remember if he said it was his favourite or funniest book however, having enjoyed Billy's own books, I thought I'd give it a go..

Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects and much more). Walking with Ghosts - A Memoir. Rather than a blow by blow lifetime biography it is a series of linked reminiscences covering his life. Brilliantly written, poetic and lyrical, funny and sad, very honest, not "up himself". I'd forgotten the book's title as I read it but the final few pages bring it clearly back to mind.
