C65 Chronograph - New Release October '20
Re: C65 Chronograph - New Release October '20
Good work CW, building upon the Super Compressor and C60 Chronograph & Sapphire releases.
Might be one to pick-up in the future.
Can't find anything much to fault with the design (which is rarely something I can say with CW). Love the bright colour flourishes. Looks great on the camel leather strap.
As someone who uses a chronograph or dive bezel daily to time various things, having both functions in a single watch is surprisingly useful. Adding a tachymeter makes it a rather 'busy' design, but I can live with that for the added functionality.
I like the light-catcher case - a blend of ergonomic function & pleasing aesthetic - plus I'm a sucker for a box sapphire crystal.
Nicely-proportioned too - or as much as can be expected when the Valjoux 7750 and it's variants mean the watch will always have to be a certain base thickness to start with.
Pricing looks fine to me. Chronographs with a Valjoux 7750 or 7750-derived movement all tend to cost more that a simple three-hander movement, it is what it is. I don't see many competitors offering a similar spec for much less at new RRP (which is likely not that 'set in stone' to start with, as we know with CW).

Indeed so, and lovely little period pieces they are.rkovars wrote: ↑Fri Oct 30, 2020 7:15 pm Remember that this sits in the C65 line. Is it a diver? Is it a chronograph? It is both. There were many watches just like this in the late 60s and 70s. Very colorful with a lot going on. It follows that esthetic very well. A better comparison would be the Bulova Deep Sea Chrono from the 70s. There are a ton from that period in this style. Some more colorful some not. I admit, it isn't to everyone's taste but it is a really good crack at what it is trying to be.

The Super Compressor is still more interesting to me, due to the design, size, lower height, "fun-ness" level. Continuing to keep an eye on it.
This chronograph is too busy and thick for me.
I still have my one and only manual chrono (7750) in the Damasko DC56 and I like it a lot, but one is more than enough for me, due to the inevitable thickness of watches using that movement or the corresponding Sellita. The Damasko has an uncluttered dial, super tough case, and is just an all-round "rough-wear" watch. I wouldn't know what to do with this C65.
I say again, I want merch (a T-shirt! bag! whatever) based on the colourful Loupe retro artwork used to promote this watch. Those are so fun, and I don't find this C65 chrono up to that level of fun or colour at all.

I'm sure you'll find something colourful and fun on the Swatch website ... which to be honest is what the cover made me think of.I don't find this C65 chrono up to that level of fun or colour at all.
I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left

Re: C65 Chronograph - New Release October '20
Just sized the bracelet (wasn’t easy but I survived the ordeal!) and am “road testing” it as I type.
These bracelets seem to be smaller than my previous CW bracelets as I would normally take two links out and still have enough room for expansion with the micro adjustment. This one really could do with only 1.5 links out?
I’m liking it a lot. I’ve been fancying a bi-compax chrono for ages and I do tend to favour 60s & 70s style watches so this was always going to pique my interest.
As people have commented already, it is a rather busy dial but in the metal, it seems to work, as you don’t tend to notice stuff until you look for it. If that makes sense?
I’d say that the bezel colour is identical to other C65s but the dial is a lovely shade of blue with a gorgeous sunburst effect, especially when caught in the right light.
The orange hands which, in my mind, looked too red and clumsy in the official pics, are actually very nicely proportioned and a perfect shade of orange for the watch.
The blue and red segments of the right hand sub dial add that lovely pop of retro vibe that you’d expect of the regatta style that it’s trying to emulate. However, the wife thinks it spoils the balance of the dial. She’s obviously wrong though!
The red numbers in the date wheel are a nice touch and bring something a little different to the party.
On my example, everything aligns as it should and appears to work perfectly. The quality of the whole piece is exactly what I’d hoped for and is, to my mind, very much worth the full asking price. Especially when compared to what is available for similar money!
I’ll try to get some better pictures posted later.
Let the honeymoon begin.
Steve.

^^^ thanks for your initial thoughts Steve.
I don’t view it being a bit busy as a weakness of the design. I take the view it is supposed to be busy.
My main concern though is your comment about your wife thinking that the blue/red on the sundial spoils the balance!
Very dangerous when the significant other starts making reasoned (although as you say, in this case wrong) comments about design aspects of a watch. That shows far too great a level of interest for my liking.

Re: C65 Chronograph - New Release October '20
Congratulations, Steve. Although my initial reaction isn’t too much altered, it does look a lot nicer in your shots than on the website – as ever.
Aside from it being busy, which I think most of us agree on, i’m not sure that the mix of colours does it for me, and I’m not a fan of that rather blocky style of hands on the subdials.
But, as we always say, it wouldn’t do if we all had the same opinion. So well done to you for getting those pictures out there, and I hope you really enjoy your new watch.

I'm not a fan of this watch but whats wrong with an aluminium bezel? A lot of people bang on about it being an issue but it's a load of rubbish - aluminium bezels haven't served Tudor too bad with the Black Bay have they? Personal opinion, obviously, but if you 'whack' an ali bezel its's probably gonna mark/dent it. However, if you 'whack' a ceramic bezel it could shatter/break. For what its worth I much prefer the look of an aluminium bezel to a ceramic one in most cases - I do say 'most' as matt ceramic, example the Bremont S300/301, is an exception to this for me.

I'm with you. I have been looking at a lot of Rolexes on Crown and Caliber. If you you use the zoom tool those ceramic bezels look like saw blades with the chips taken out of the edges. My GMT-Master 1675 from '77-'78 has a couple of dings in the bezel but over all it is fine.TigerChris wrote: ↑Sat Nov 07, 2020 6:37 amI'm not a fan of this watch but whats wrong with an aluminium bezel? I also am not too big of a fan of the shiny ceramic bezels. That is one of the reasons I tried the C60 Ombre with its matte bezel. I think it looks great.
