Although some of the bikes are equipped with blues and twos, the group I ride for has a "no lights" policy, due to the additional (onerous) training, certification and liability issues. We are required to obey all speed limits and have no special dispensations. Having a liveried bike does cause some "interesting" behaviour in other road users though.
I see. I was going to ask you what the training was like as I’d imagine that it would be rather tough.
I guess it varies from group to group. In my case, the requirement is for an advanced (IAM/ROSPA) qualification. There is a further check ride (which was basically another advanced test) followed by a few induction events and material handling course etc.
Pretty much the same here...
Group Induction;
Mandatory fundraising events of between 2 - 6 per year;
IAM/ROSPA Advanced Rider qualification (Using RoadCraft which is the same as the Police training);
Check ride by a Senior Member of the Group;
Material Handling Course;
Blue Light Training;
Bike Familiarisation (BMW R1200RT or Yamaha FJR1300).

Yes, we are required to obey all speed limits, laws of the road and have no special dispensations.
Blue and Twos can ONLY be used in an emergency that has been authorised and signed off by a Doctor or Clinician - this is actually a very rare occurrence. This is only beneficial for getting through traffic.
...and, before anyone asks, NO you can't go through red lights.

My learnings from today:

1. All the NHS staff I had contact with were extremely friendly and helpful - making the process very rewarding.
2. The FJR1300 is a great bike for filtering through miles and miles of motorway tailbacks.
3. My gloves leak.

We used Avignon as our base in Provence to visit Arles, Nimes, Pont du Gard, Aix-en-Provence, and a wine tour of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, so it meant I only had a morning to nip out, so did a loop from Bedoin round to Malaucene. Gutted really as we drove up a few days later and went round to Sault and Gorge de la Nesque and it was stunning!

The Gorge is fantastic - I rode it the day before my Cinglés ride in a tour du Ventoux loop around the mountain from Faucon, through Bedoin and out to Sault before heading back to Faucon

To Downer and Strapmeister, thank you.

You are part of a fantastic group of volunteers who provide a great service of which I hope I never have the need!

This was something that I aspired to do before my biking days were curtailed. Ironically this was due to compliance with the wishes of my (new at the time) wife who was a serving Police Officer and had attended too many two wheeled incidents to be able to live with me disappearing off into the distance on my bike!

Now that we have been married 10 years and she is a bit more fed up with me maybe I should broach the subject again! Plus we have moved from Kent to N. Devon so there are no homecidal LHD trucks to contend with, just tractors, lots of tractors!

Best wishes and safe riding to you both and all other bikers.

Cheers,

Paul

Thanks Paul. I can't claim my motives are purely altruistic as I do enjoy the challenge of riding the bike in areas I would not normally visit, particularly heavily congested urban zones which give me a chance to hone my filtering skills. I also gain a sense of purpose, which can sometimes be lacking in retirement.

As for the risks, whllst it is statistically unarguable that motorcyclists are more at risk than other road users, I believe with the right combination of attitude and training, it's possible to mitigate those risks to an acceptable level.

Yes, sold the xsr700, just wasnt using the power, wanted something lighter and more flickable, smaller engined are way more fun. The versys is ok but think il go back to the suzuki dl250 , that was a great bike. Still got the Enfield aswell.

Congrats on the blood biking thing dude, that is crazy cool and very honourable, looks like a lot of fun, id totally go for the blues and twos license, really good bikes those giant Yams.
I miss all the great things that may never be.
