Truly stunning, the guy was a watchmaking genius. Thanks again for sharing this on what is the perfect day to indulge myself in a good read.

This will take some time to read properly, but what an amazing story!

I have seen the Harrison marine timekeepers a few times now, and seeing them working never fails to raise the hairs on the back of my neck or even to make my eyes sting.

H4, as you probably know, is no longer allowed to run. Although the other larger clocks are designed not to require lubrication, this one does and I don’t fully understand it, but I believe that the rate of degradation were it to run would lead to its eventually being the ultimate Frankenwatch.

Again, thanks for a brilliant link!
