An Amazing Find

Post by Boydesian »

As many of you are aware, my job involves researching and ultimately selling military antiques and weaponry. You can imagine then that our office, which isn't small, is a lot like a big toy chest for guys like me who grew up watching Victory at Sea, Where Eagles Dare, 633 Squadron, Baa Baa Black Sheep, and the like. I've become slightly engrossed in some recently purchased USAAC and USAAF aircraft memorabilia recently, and remembered that I once noticed a box in one of our storage rooms marked "Aircraft Gauges". So, after lunch today I dug around the back and extricated it from its hiding place. Upon opening it my mouth fell open because in addition to a couple of pilot's slide rules, a USN instrument panel compass, USN vacuum pressure gauge, and Canadian volt meter display; the box contained three USN Waltham aircraft clocks, sixteen 1940 and 1941 dated RAF cockpit instrument clocks, and the parts to build some more! Here are some photos:

There is some variation to the RAF clocks. In this photo, the top example is stem-wound, but the lower clock is wound by rotating the knurled bezel (I imagine that's much easier in gloved hands than winding a little stem):

The Waltham clocks are all identical. Two are complete and intact (they both work too):

Here is a closer picture of the loose parts and components:

With CWL's recent Spitfire commemorative release, I recognized the dials on the RAF clocks instantly! It was a lot of fun opening that box up, and it will be a lot more fun to catalog them. You know, despite the fact that these will all be sold at some point in the future (they belong to the company after all, not me), I have already finagled permission from my boss to keep one of them as a "semi-permanent loan" desk clock. Can you guess which one? :D

You guessed Waltham...and you're right Kip. :) Once the clocks are catalogued I will post a link here as they become available in case anybody is interested. And yes, we ship worldwide.
