Care for leather straps

Post by PowerMalc »

How do you care for leather straps?
1. Inside. What care can you give to the inside of a leather strap in keeping it clean of sweat and dead skin cells.
2. Outside. Whats best for keeping it supple and free of cracks.

The inner bit if it is Nubuck (soft and light cream) is difficult to keep clean as it is next to your skin and the sweat and salt soak in and turn it brown. if it starts to smell then these are some suggestions that I have come across.

• Make a solution of water and baking soda. wash the band in it and then let dry.
• Rub half a lemon rind on the strap and allow it to dry it will help
• Wipe the band over with a cloth which has been dipped into vinegar leave to dry in a sunny place .the smell will be gone

On the external there are specialist leather cleaning and protecting creams. Autoglym (used in cars) gets good reviews.

Saddle wax is another product that works.

I have read not to use shoe polish and don't use products that are designed for leather on crocodile/alligator straps.

I have used the Tableau leather cleaning and leather cream (Robert Dyas in the UK) which has brought old straps back into use again. Whether it is worth the price of cleaning them or just replace the strap when it is too far gone is a personal decision.

Where could I find products designed for crocodile/alligator straps? (I has been wondering what would work best on them.)
