Old age

Post by Megacatt »

Due to old age I failed to remove my watch last night when bathing my new son. This was because I have been wearing my CWL Makaira Pro for some time and the 500m water resistance should have been OK in 4" depth of the bath. Unfortunately I was at the time wearing my 1972(ish) Omega Seamaster f300Hz which has not been very water resistant for some time.

The good news is that it's still singing away and keeping good time. The bad news is that it has some condensation (not too bad). So, coming to the point, what's the best way to dry out an ageing electronic watch, preferably without sending it to my horologist and I don't have the technology to get the back off myself?

I would be tempted to put it in the airing cupboard with the crown out for a day or so. This is what I do with my camera equipment when it gets a bit too wet.

I've heard of people pulling the crown out and sticking the watch in a bowl of rice...uncooked, I assume?

Thanks all, I'll try the warm place with the crown out.

With my brain in its current state if I put it in rice I'll end up tipping the whole lot into boiling water and try and eat it

That is definitely on the "do not try this at home" list.

I own a number of hummers, I would get it checked over just in case.
That way you will know it will keep going for years.
As above I recommend Electric Watch repair service.

Thanks for the recommendation for electric watches, I'll check them out.

The warm place and crown out seems to have worked as it's still keeping great time and the condensation has disappeared. I managed to avoid eating it as well.
