Racing/Motorsport watch

Post by gbbird »

All,

I have decided that I would like to add a racing/Motorsport watch to my collection, and at the moment have narrowed down my search to these little beauties.

CW C700 Grand Rapide

Steinhart Racetimer black

Of the above, which one would you go for? or do you have any other suggestions in this price bracket? My only requirements are that it needs to be predominantly black/dark in colour and have day & date function

Cheers

Greg

I do admit to having a fondness for that Steinhart, Greg.
The CW looks quite boring in contrast I think...

The C700 has always been a non-starter for me ( )
The second watch is taking a few to many design queues from the Monaco for me. So if I bought the Steinhart it would remind me too much of the watch I didn't have.
I would go for the Monaco, which can be found second hand. Or may be the up coming C70 GP Ecurie Ecosse D-Type.
I suppose it all comes down to if you want a general motor sport watch, or are following a team, or era.
As you can see I ignored the question.

Don't see the C700 as a motorsport watch as such.

And whilst inclining to agreement with the above, we need to define terms.

Does it become motorsport by virtue of branding and sponsorship?
by virtue of case design features and detailing?
by virtue of word assocation?
by virtue of event association/evocation?
or by virtue of functionality?

For me its a question of functionality so a stopwatch with lap timer function, legible and useable whilst driving and with good lume.

I can't speak for the C700 but I do have a black Racetimer. It is truly one of my very favorites...i've been out of town for the past few days and brought 3 pieces with me, so far I've only worn the Racetimer! Just love it! I guess there's one comment I would make regarding your wants...the dial color of the black is not real;ly that black! more like a greyish-brown depending on the light. Goes extremely well with the orange accents imho...

Here's an old pic:

Best of luck with your choice...probably can't go wrong with either!

I quite like that Steinhart, looks a lot like one of the Tudor designs (although that is blue). But as someone has stated Steinharts 100% take their designs cues from elsewhere. If you already have a few watches and aren't desperate to get on the watch wagon then I would save for a little longer and get a mint condition second hand Tag Heuer. Not a massive fan of Tag but if I was looking for a motorsport watch then they have to be on the list. Carreras are sexy, and the Monaco's are just plain drop dead cool.
