Anything over-priced at new price will appear good value second-hand - but that doesn't necessarily mean it is - it might mean simply that the second-hand value is a more accurate reflection of its real value...

A watch selling second-hand for more than new might be one of the best value on the market if its price continues to rise substantially - certainly better value than buying one which dropped a lot but continues to drop / doesn't increase...

so really difficult to say!

Generally brands that are not well known on the high street or on watch forums.

For example Monkey (who does not appear to have been on the forum for a while) collects vintage Tissot. At one stage they used the same movements as the Omegas but due to the way the Swatch group have positioned the two brands Omega are now seen as more desirable and their vintage models attract a premium even though mechanically they are the same as the Tissot models using a Lemania movement.

I can absolutely where you're coming from, and indeed Monkey too. It is always a surprise to see Swatch and Omega mentioned in the same sentence. I'm thinking not so much chalk and cheese, more like spam and Chateaubriand steak.

Hamilton, Oris and Longines may be as they are good value new and take a hit second hand.

Going by the recent sales on this forum something like a the lesser known Sqaule brand would be great value compared to the ever popular Steinhart watches. If you want a Sub homage the Sqaule would seem much better value.

Personally I think that if you can afford a second hand Omega then they are a wise option. Save a large chunk buying a PO, Seamaster or Speedmaster second-hand and then enjoy the fact that they don't seem to drop much further after that provided they're looked after properly.

There are two ways of looking at this...
1. The saving achieved by buying used
2. The year-on-year increase in value of a used 'piece.

My two best buys have been my Breitling and my Omega. Both purchased at a fraction of the new RRP, but each is appreciating in resale value year-on year.

Black Bough recently had two 1958 9ct Rolexes....at about £1500 each. At that price, I'd've thought them bombproof.

What model of Omega did you buy if you don't mind me asking?

Was it a Speedmaster?

some limited editions hold value well, too. one of the reasons i was happy with my halios tropik purchase is that i know they'll only make them for a limited time and that halios watches are very popular in the resale market. not that i *plan* to sell, but i know it will likely hold value better than something more common.

Thanks for all the info, from what I've gleaned I need to get my head down and get saving for a PO

What brought this thought about was the Perrelet Seacraft I was thinking of buying and wether a limited run, 2 years I think it was in production, would actually see the prices increase in the future? And yes I know you shouldn't buy watches expecting them to make you money, I do actually like the white dial chrono :-)

it's possible. it depends on how popular the watch was/is. i've seen evidence that earlier halios watches keep their popularity and don't last long on sales forums. i don't really know much about the perrelets.

I don't own one, but it seems that Rolex represent good value second hand. It seems that many of them, after they reach a certain age, don't drop any further in price, and then increase along with the RRP increase on the new models.

TBH, I think that says it all. If a WIS doesn't know much about it, then how will it sell? I predict not very well. And how would it sell to the hoi-polloi on Ebay? Again, I would predict not very well. It's also mid-range which isn't good. Generally, top and bottom of the range hold their value best. Eg: Rolex and Steinhart.
It's a very fine looking watch - I like the four-hander with subdial - but I don't think I'd buy one as an investment, unless I'd researched the used price very thoroughly. Just buy to enjoy.
