Vintage Rotary Question

Post by welshlad »

Visiting my father-in-law this morning we got talking about watches and he suddenly produced a solid gold Rotary watch he was given either for his 18th or 21st birthday, ie about 60 years ago. It was originally on a brown leather strap, but that has long disappeared and it's been on a gold plated expanding bracelet since the 1960s or early 1970s.

He hasn't used it for many years, so it will need a service and we didn't try to wind it in case it caused any damage after so much time.

I thought I'd show it here to see if anyone had any information in it and some suggestions of places to get it serviced and working again.

Sizewise, it's 25mm square.

Here are some pics (in its original box):

Have you contacted Rotary directly? They seem to be pretty good in assisting their customers past and present.

Personally I do love Rotary watches, even though they are Swiss there is just something very "British" About them.

A delightful family heirloom - nice to see it.

As for a service - unless anyone has a personal recommendation, you might want to try someone on the BHI list http://www.bhi.co.uk/repairers-register ... st+England

Hope this helps - it would be grand to get the watch up and running again.

Thats a nice old watch and would look great on a brown leather strap.

Rotarys these days tend to be looked at as more cheap and cheerful, but watches from this era do have more class about them and were considered better quality I believe.

I'd definitely get that overhauled and a good independent watchmaker should be able to do this for you.

Keep us posted :)
