STEINHART AND LACO PILOT WATCHES

Post by Vaj666 »

After purchasing my c60 Trident, these are my next options.
I will definitely by the Laco but will have to think hard on which Steinhart to buy. I like them both but can't be greedy?
Any suggestions from fellow members?

Laco has the history and a smaller case.

If you want big, go Steinhart. If you want history, go Laco.

Either way you're a winner IMHO

PS There are two Steinhart Pilots on fleabay at the moment.

I love the look of the Laco more so I think than the Steinart with the similar face. Pity they do not do a black strap. Not heard of the Laco movement before.
Do you know if they make their own movements and if they are any good.
The price of the Laco is very good too being only 298 euro.

Steinhart movements are not "In house" You will need to pay substantially more for an in house movement or purchase something Asian (Orient, Citizen, Seiko, Seagull) Or Russian (Vostok, Poljot etc) For an in house movement. That obviously does not mean they are of any less quality and although I have never owned a Steinhart watch they generally get very positive reviews. Try searching around the forums, I am sure you will find quite a few reviews of the watches you are interested in.

From a personal point of view I prefer the Laco. It just "Looks" More what a Pilots watch should. The Steinhart just looks a modern take on the pilots watch so its pretty much down to you and what you want in the watch.

Steinhart use ETA movements Laco use Miyota in their cheaper watches and ETA in their more expensive ones.

Not to confuse the issue, but had you considered Stowa?
They are slightly smaller than the Laco (40 vs. 42 mm) but their pedigree is equally historic.

Although Stowa is moving into another price bracket. :?

Having said that, if I had a choice it would be Stowa

£582 at yesterday's exchange rates ... that is quite a bit more than Laco or Steinhart (about two cases of wine!), but not too far off CWL territory. It's always worth checking on their website, too: hidden in the category "Accessory" they occasionally sell off demonstration pieces or returned watches at a discount.

Alex -- who is glad that Stowa do not have the CWL return guarantee or temptation might get the better of him.
