Turning bezel while watch is submerged...?
Turning bezel while watch is submerged...?
Probably a silly question, but is it safe to turn the rotating bezel of a diver's watch whilst underwater?
(I have the C60 Trident-Pro, if that's at all relevant).
Thanks!

Turning bezel while watch is submerged...?
The bezel is actually designed to set your dive time. On "proper" dive watches the bezel will only turn one way, so if you do know it underwater you'll end up with a shorter five time than planned (safer than a longer one!)

thread of the year?
I miss all the great things that may never be.
Re: Turning bezel while watch is submerged...?
Yeah, I realise that. I just wondered if people usually turn the bezel to the desired time *before* submerging the watch, and whether or not doing so underwater was safe or not.DAC wrote:The bezel is actually designed to set your dive time. I know the answer now.
Thanks for the information/help anyway!

It is an obvious question... unless you already know the answer.

Re: Turning bezel while watch is submerged...?
Better submerged than on the beach. Sand grains are big trouble for a rotating bezel!
Re: Turning bezel while watch is submerged...?
What kind of 'submerged' are we talking about, wash hand basin? Fine.
If this question were in the context of a SCUBA dive, the answer would be a big 'No'. You don't go faffing about setting your bottom time when you are submerged, that would be irresponsible. Realistically, a dive watch like a C60 is going to be your backup not your primary. However, if you have a computer failure, it may become your primary. So, setting the bezel in the water on a SCUBA dive, nah. On the boat/jetty, or the RIB as part of your dive plan and buddy check, Yes, set it then. Once you are in the water don't touch it!
I would go so far to say that wouldn't even do it in a controlled environment like the bottom of a swimming pool, you might get into the habit of doing it and this could get passed on in the real environment. With the greatest respect, somebody might use one of these watches on a dive so, safety first.
Hope that helps.

Re: Turning bezel while watch is submerged...?
i set mine when i hit the surface and am about to deflate my bcd. i move it close to that when i am on the boat (like 5-6 mins from current time) so it's an easy rotation, but there are times where i may bob on the surface for a few minutes while i wait for people. or things may happen to create a pause from when i'm sitting and ready to get up and off the boat until i'm actually in the water. it's not an accurate timer if you start it several minutes before you begin your descent.
now, i always set it on the surface, not actually submerged. but that doesn't mean the watch isn't wet or isn't in/out of the water more than a few times right before i set it.

Re: Turning bezel while watch is submerged...?
I should probably clarify that I am *NOT* a diver (can't you tell?? )
I was just asking the question in terms of cleaning the watch, which I really should have made clear at the start I guess.
Thanks for all the replies and info regardless!
