A serious step upwards for Seiko?

Post by marksaxton »

Hello Gents.

Opinions always sought.

I came across this today and thought, wow, for a Japanese dress watch, this does look the business.

Trying to smother my Swiss Made bias, does anyone agree that this is a very serious step upwards for Seiko (ignoring their ridiculously priced Grand Seikos).

Or did I put too much curry powder in my beans on toast?

M.

Certainly a bit different to a Monster!!

(Although I'd prefer a monster). :)

Not for me either, I actually think it looks a bit cheap rather than classy.

Not smitten immediately.

1. The aperture on the dial looks like it's pretending to be a whirligig...which it ain't.

2. The cringeworthy wording in the ad. "Executive watch"...

Sorry, but I'm another "No" (mainly).

Seiko make a terrific range of watches, lots that look better and seem of better quality (to me) than this, it's just that they don't sell them through official channels in the UK (aside from GS, that you mention, and Ananta) - I don't think Yorkshire watches are an official AD, but that wouldn't stop me using them. I think some of the quartz and kinetics that make up Seiko's UK range are nicer looking than this and are probably as well built. It no doubt beats the low end Pulsar and Lorus offerings for build/quality. There's a couple of J Springs that look good but again I'd expect this watch to be better put together, and the movement will be of better quality.

I think what turns me off this one is the bi-metal case/bracelet and the open heart. The dial looks to be nicely detailed, the movement looks good and the bracelet sturdy enough.

BUT WHAT MATTERS... is whether you like it.

Very nice, but...

Problem is, there would always be a "but" and I can't quite put my finger on why. Can't say the two tone suits this. However, I like the face and the pattern and the exhibition feature. Movement through the case back is possibly the weakest detail

Better than many others out there though for the same price....

Well, I know we all have different tastes and beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that, but, inevitably there's a but, it really looks very cheap indeed. Sorry, just giving an honest response.

There is a version of this watch that Aifo has with a black strap....now that looks classy but yorkshire watches dont appear to sell the same model, their version has a tacky looking bezel on it.

Doesn't make it for me. As Dom said, the 2 tone takes away from it.

That said.... what matters is your opinion.

Never heard of Yorkshire watches, noticed their Black Monster is dearer than one on the RLT site.
