The Rolex family...

Post by f1colin »

... finally got around to taking / uploading a few photos of the Rolexes. This represents a 25 year interest, started on my 21st Birthday with the humble but totally reliable Precision date Oyster acquired from the Rolex atelier in Bond St (was located on the site of what is now Ralph Lauren). Nice anecdote on this one was that I specially ordered it with a jubilee bracelet, but a fine chap called Mr Basilico who sold me the watch waived the extra charge as the piece was late in being delivered for collection on the weekend of my birthday. Bear in mind that was £50, but back in 1987, the watch was only £475! Turn the clock forward 23 years and it was the very same Mr Basilico who I bought the white faced Daytona Cosmograph from at Watches of Switzerland in Bond Street 2 years ago!

So, replica free, here are my very own famous five:

With some F1 memorabilia, GMT meets Nigel Mansells' Williams F1 steering wheel from 1991:

Daytona meets Ayrton Senna's McLaren steering wheel:

"Genesis" - the original Oysterdate with Nelson Piquet's Benetton F1 wheel:

and the "James Bond" non COSC, non date sub with Fernando Alonso's 2006 Renault F1 world championship wheel:

Do I need more Meds?!?!!? :D

OK, I'm getting seriously jealous now...

...and I'm no great fan of Jubilee bracelets (though I have almost no wrist hair to be pulled) but that GMT is just lovely - THAT's how bi-metal should be done... and interesting that I should see this on the same day as Redd's Raven Vintage thread with the golden hands.

The GMT was never on my list, but I fell for it on the jubilee as IMHO it looks sooo much better than on the Oyster bracelet for some reason and it was a steal - it's the oldest (1982) and I picked it up when they were very unloved. The dealer had to service it to secure a sale. I did have a divers clasp fitted though...

Not a fan of Rolex, other than the sub tbh.

'Stunning' F1 collection you have there and would love to see more please, please, please. At first I was thinking 'what steering wheel?' till I figured your modern day space shuttle versions are still relatively new.

I'm not sure if I should admit to this but that collection of watches and F1 steering wheels made me dribble.

Beautiful collection you have there

I'm not really a Rolex man but it's nice to see your collection...especially with the original photo props and history behind them (the watches & the props).

Not a big Rolex guy, but I'll take either of the last two. The Precision Date, like the Explorer and Air King, is understated elegance, and doesn't scream "look at me! I'm wearing a Rolex". The no-date Sub is iconic, and I'd be happy to own that, except for the constant "is that a fake Rolex?" questions. Maybe if I ever buy one I'll just need to hang out with a better class of people to avoid those questions..
