Fancied Something different...

Post by Dancematt »

Ever gone to an Indian Restuarant knowing that your going to order your usual chicken korma only to have a change of heart and think 'maybe i don't try enough new things?' Then you see the chefs special on the menu and think, what the hell; its worth a try!......only to be greeted by an ugly heap of mush.... but thankfully, it tasted good this time!...Heres the watch equivalent..(for me anyway)

Casio Pro Trek PRW 2000 T

Until recently it was pretty much the top of the range Pro Trek, now superseded by a 200m version with tide and moon data which weighs in at 15mm thick and 50mm wide.

Image

I'm finding it quite refreshing since purchase although completely against what i usually like i.e its massive for a start ( 50mm wide although a thickness of only 10.5 mm helps a lot in that department) and its obviously not many peoples cup of tea.

Image

The case is resin with a titanium bezel. The Bracelet also uses titanium as a base metal so it is also very light, a double locking clasp, rounded links for added comfort and a pin and collar system put it above any G shock bracelet that i've tried.

Image

The movement is standard g shock fare - Radio controlled tough solar with world time, auto illuminator light, 5 alarms, stopwatch and countdown timer but with added abc functions (altimeter, barometer and compass) aswell as the ability to record the results of these functions when used plus sunrise and sunset data for any place in the world (just enter lat/longitude details) - a dual layer screen increases legibility whilst in different modes and adds a minimal amount of geeky coolness.

Image
Image

Will i ever use all these functions? probably not (however the barometer is handy) and despite its size i enjoy wearing it (which is more than i could say for the G's) - Scary wrist shot coming up

LOL!!

Hmmm...maybe that is a weird couple of shots to show scale isn't it.....would you believe my wrist is 6.5 inches? the short lugs allow me to wear it without looking like a total muppet.....definitely not oranges....i think!!

:D :D :D :D
There's something about the look of these big Casios that appeals (and Suunto*, and...) but not enough to bring myself to buy one - obviously it'd look so much more in proportion on my 6.75" wrist - but nonetheless...

* actually I do own a Suunto, but it is a map-reading compass on a yellow cord that easily fits round my 16" neck.

The chefs special was 50% off plus another 5% with a craftily added discount code which is what pushed me over the edge into buying territory otherwise i would have stuck with my usual :)

The funny thing about the Pro Trek is that the look is completely dated now what with the more elegant Tissot T touch and as you say Suunto but being a casio, it somehow adds to it appeal.

Looks good Matt, and surprisingly not too huge on your wrist. I have no doubt it will be a great beater/tool watch.

I like the tool look of that, you can always use it for setting your automatics. :D
No more Quartz (except when I cannot resist).

Interesting watch, great "grab and go" for any field expedition and deserve some "mud shots", be aware, before you know it you might be parachuting or mountain biking next.

Thank goodness for Titanium! With wrists like those, severe arm strain would be inevitable with a standard steel case!

There is still something strangely appealing about digital dials on watches like yours. I might just have to add something similar to my sons collection just so I can have a play!
