Well that's debatable. For one the original had no logo and no small seconds. For another, the hands on the original were blued. And finally the deployant clasp on the IWC takes the cake. No doubt it's a high quality watch, it just doesn't really look like these.gweilgi wrote:
IWC's Big Pilot is a very decent and faithful recreation of the original.

You're not imagining things. The Augsburg is cheap because it uses the Miyota movement instead of the ETA. Also its case is completely different from the ones used with the ETA models. The ETA models that I'm aware of are:alanpar wrote:The Augsburg looks stunning value or am I missing something? Stowa's entry price is 650 euros. Why is that Augsburg so cheap vs the Stowa. Also the Hof is 450 euros for a quartz.Am i being obtuse?
Paderborn
Leipzig
Munster
Memmingen
Westerland
Saarbrucken
Friedrichschafen
Dortmund
These models are the one with the sandblasted case and the engraving Fl 23883 which was the German air ministry classification for the Beobachtungsuhren.

I believe that most, if not all of their automatic Fliegers have a display back.alanpar wrote:Did I not see some Laco's with a display back.I'm not finding their website the most intuitive. You're making a passionate and persuasive case for LACO as is ArmyMedicDad
Don't know which model, but >
And this video is of the Bielefeld (the one in my price range)

All the Laco fliegers that use the Miyota movement have display backs. These are the ones with the following movements.ArmyMedicDad wrote:I believe that most, if not all of their automatic Fliegers have a display back.alanpar wrote:Did I not see some Laco's with a display back.I'm not finding their website the most intuitive. You're making a passionate and persuasive case for LACO as is ArmyMedicDad
LACO 15 = Miyota 9015
LACO 21 = Miyota 821A

"Cheap" is very relative. From a comparison review of the ETA vs Miyota >holyk wrote:You're not imagining things. The Augsburg is cheap because it uses the Miyota movement instead of the ETA.
"The ETA 2824-2 movement would cost a watch maker less than $80. Imagine that, your Rolex Submariner that you spent thousands of dollars on has an $80 movement!"
A Miyota movement typically runs around $40. So while $40 is indeed cheaper than $80, both are still in the same "below $100" price range. Not like one is $40 and the other is in the hundreds of dollars.
So yes, the Miyota is "less expensive".

So I should revise my statement to say that about half have display backs. Seems that the ones marked as "Original" do not have display backs (and indeed have movements other than Miyota).holyk wrote:All the Laco fliegers that use the Miyota movement have display backs. Now I just have to decide between pvd and ss (Bielefeld or the Aachen).

we seem to be going on parallel paths you to a Laco type B me to an A.
Re: Which Flieger? Up to £650. Help please
The Miyota models price difference from the ETA isn't just because of the movement. There's the sandblasted case, the thermal blued hands, the domed anti reflective sapphire crystal all of which add up but results in a finer watch. When I say Miyota and ETA with regard to Laco watches it's because they're two completely different beasts. While it's not the movement that drives up the costs it is the most convenient way to categorize them.ArmyMedicDad wrote:"Cheap" is very relative. Holyk you could not have been more helpful or informative and it is very much appreciated. I think I'll get the Augsburg to hopefully scratch my Flieger itch and then still have some in the kitty towards a Steinhart Ocean One Vintage to scratch my Diver itch . Never works like that though does it

You know I find that with watches as long as it makes you happy, it's a great watch! So good luck on your diver and flieger watch hunt.alanpar wrote:Holyk you could not have been more helpful or informative and it is very much appreciated.
