What is your completion watch?
I hope everyone had a great Christmas.
A couple of threads recently have prompted me to ask this question - I’ve searched but not sure whether it’s been specifically asked before. The question is:
Owning which watch would be most likely to cause you to never buy another watch again? I.e., purchase of this watch makes your collection complete, or gives you no inclination to purchase any other watches?
To be clear, I’m not talking about a single watch collection, in fact more the opposite; it’s the final watch ever to be added to your current collection.
From a couple of recent posts I think a couple of forum members might, for the purpose of this question, actually have that piece already.
While I hope to see answers that are unequivocal, it would be interesting to see two possible options - one which is in the realms of reality and another which assumes no availability or budget restrictions.
I’m still thinking about mine and will add at some point.

Sorry Michael, I don’t think I can answer this question with the way you have worded it. So please allow my to be cheeky here and rephrase it to selfishly suit me. The reasons why will become clear though with my answer.timepieces_and_bags wrote: ↑Thu Dec 26, 2024 9:05 am Owning which watch would be most likely to cause you to never buy another watch again? That’s better…….timepieces_and_bags wrote: ↑Thu Dec 26, 2024 9:05 am Owning which watch what would be most likely to cause you to never buy another watch again?
First let me give some background to this. For years I have spent my spare funds on something for me. This hasn’t been to the detriment of my family or what we have been able to do but has allowed me some form of collecting over the years.
It used to be musical equipment. I bought new instruments and musical gadgets over the years, but with the arrival of my daughter along with my job taking up a lot of my spare time this eventuality died away and I sold most of my gear when I was unable to commit the time to playing in bands.
I’ve always collected vinyl since before it went away, and now that it’s back I’m buying it again. However a £30 record is not the same extravagance as a watch or new bass amplifier.
I always liked watches but didn’t spend much on them until about 12 years ago when I was more able to afford it. Over this time I’ve bought and sold some very nice watches and to strictly answer your question, I may have bought my best watch with my IWC Ingenieur.
However deep down I have always known this, but I did openly admit it a while back. I just enjoy the excitement of getting something new that is something special. Records don’t really count in this regard here.
So for this reason I think I will, for now at least, still buy and sell some watches just for the enjoyment of the whole thing, even though I know none will beat what I already have.
So to answer your/my question, what will cause me to never buy another watch? It will be a new interest that gives me the same enjoyment I get from buying a new watch. It won’t be a watch itself.

Re: What is your completion watch?
I've never particularly been one to search for 'the next watch' or indeed have sought out a 'grail'. In that respect, in the words of U2, "I still haven't found what I'm looking for."
That said, my Obscura, which just kind of popped up, has come mighty close to being 'the one' but I'm keeping an open mind for the future.

Re: What is your completion watch?
Ah yes, an easy answer for me I think.
Part of the reason this would stop me is because it's likely to never really be in my justifiable budget, certainly not at retail and it'll need a lot more depreciation before secondary prices are achievable. I present to you, the Patek 5326g.
I am obsessed with this watch, the textured dial, the numerals, the clous de Paris (hobnail) case sides. I like the annual calendar and the Moonphase, I love the dual time complication, it's just my idea of perfect.
If I could do a straight swap for all the watches I currently own for that, I do it in a heart beat.

Re: What is your completion watch?
Difficult question.
The Twelve Ti, purchased in June 2023, could be the last watch I ever buy. Not because it’s a showstopper, collection-completer of a watch. I like it very much but it wouldn’t be the last one to leave if the ship went down. It’s more because CW and other sanely affordable brands haven’t produced anything that I like recently.
I’m getting a bit fussy in my old age. I want a dressy, super slim, rose gold tonneau with a black dial, but I can’t afford a Vacheron. CW won’t make one in a month of Sundays, methinks, so I’ll just stick to what I have.
So for the moment the Twelve is in pole position as the last purchase.

Re: What is your completion watch?
So here are my choices:
“Reality”
Either:
- Rolex Submariner (no date) since this would really complete my Rolex steel diver collection OR
- The Omega Silver Snoopy Award 50th Anniversary - this is probably the only Omega that’s actually on my radar at the moment and though I probably have no realistic chance of picking up a new one, I think probably Omega as a brand would be completed from my perspective at the moment.
“Money no object”
The A Lange & Söhne 1815 Up/Down.

This was definitely one of my considerations when I said some may have what could be their completion watch already Guy.Bahnstormer_vRS wrote: ↑Thu Dec 26, 2024 10:15 am That said, my Obscura, which just kind of popped up, has come mighty close to being 'the one' but I'm keeping an open mind for the future.

Re: What is your completion watch?
This is a very difficult question for me because ultimately I am a perfectionist, in all areas of my life, so I am never truly happy with anything. At 50+ years of age, it has not made for an easy life. Thankfully I have an exceptional wife who is wired the same way and very understanding.timepieces_and_bags wrote: ↑Thu Dec 26, 2024 9:05 am Owning which watch would be most likely to cause you to never buy another watch again? Based on this, I thought I would use others posts to help explain my condition...

But if forced to make a choice, I would choose a Patek 5212. The issue being that I would spend a lot of money to acquire it only to find out it is probably far from perfect.

Re: What is your completion watch?
All very hypothetical I’m afraid. Having said that I bought my Nomos Tangente in the early summer and have subsequently had no interest in anything else. There’s really nothing that’s affordable to me that I interested in.
Now in the realms of financial irresponsibly these two have got me hooked.

One is almost becoming feasible if I were to sell off a few and I’d be like a child, endlessly fascinated by the revolving dial. The other will never be feasible, not least since they’re now only available in various grades of unobtanium.

Re: What is your completion watch?
@iain That's a great final point. For me the biggest slow down in my watch acquisition is the knowledge that I don't actually need more watches. There's hundreds I would like to own. There must be dozens of CW watches I would happily own. I could go a year or two without buying another, but that doesn't mean I've stopped looking, and won't buy any more.iain wrote: ↑Thu Dec 26, 2024 10:10 amSorry Michael, I don’t think I can answer this question with the way you have worded it. Re: What is your completion watch?
For me I believe the thrill is more about getting something new that is simply mine and not shared with or for anyone else in my household. So I don't think any watch will truly be the collection stopper.
If pushed the one watch that has me is the blue breguet tradition 7597. Can't justify spending that much one watch though ( yet).

Re: What is your completion watch?
Really a tough question. My collection is down to a mere 9 watches now, with one already listed for sale, and two others probably to follow. That brings me to just 6 - 3 of which I are what I consider “the greatest watches ever made”, namely a Speedy Pro, a Submariner Date, and a vintage Datejust. It’s hard to add anything to those and I’m both unwilling to and uninterested in spending over $500 on a watch again, so it’ll be cheapies for me for a while, if not “forever”.
I’m saving my fun money for a second car which is an even worse way to spend money than watches

Re: What is your completion watch?
Back to the OP - I see my collection as ever evolving so I don't see any watch stopping that. I don't have an end goal for the collection. I've been buying watches for a long time and that is the one realization I have come to in this adventure.
That doesn't mean I don't have a money is no object capstone. One watch that would be the pinnacle of collecting for me.
For me it would be a MilSub 5513/5517. The Submariner distilled down to its very essence. Perfection.
A second one albeit way more attainable would be a 1665 Seadweller 'Great White'
