Think I’m with the view that I don’t have a completion watch, but some great suggestions made. On other threads I’ve written about my collection varying over time (exclusively CW to a varied collection). I had a decisive moment a couple of years ago to sell off a number of CW watches to make room for other brands but there wasn’t one watch in mind. I don’t think price or exclusivity does it for me as purchases at the higher end of the price spectrum like Omega and NOMOS didn’t make me think ‘I’m done’ (aside from the dent in the bank balance  ). Of the watches I’ve bought over the years none gave me a ‘that’s it’ vibe.

Would one watch ‘complete’ my collection? No. For starters I don’t think I have the discipline-having set a ceiling for the number in the collection and getting to it last summer I am now over it (and I had a strict one-in-one-out policy for CW that I broke a few days ago!). I also don’t aim to have representation from certain brands or try to have all types and complications represented. I buy what I want and like.

Would I sell the lot for one grail watch? No, in part as I don’t have one! But also as I enjoy watches and like having the option of wearing different pieces. There isn’t one watch in the box I find myself going to significantly more regularly and equally nothing in there that doesn’t get worn.

If money were no object I’d probably end up with far too many watches rather than one! If I had to choose just one from my collection I’d struggle and I’m yet to find the watch, which is why I’ve waffled on here and not given a direct answer…

Completion watches, I probably already have mine, the Hanhart 417ES. It's not the most expensive watch or technically accomplished. It's just a very appealing watch favoured by me that I learned about by its association with the actor Steve McQueen. Let's be honest, he could have worn any luxury watch he wanted, but it was this watch that appears to have come to him whilst being a part of a US motocross team competing in Germany that he appears to have favoured above all others. I've owned mine for 16 months or so now and fully get it.

In truth I'd happily stick where I am. There might be room for a Christopher Ward, I find myself quite taken with the titanium Twelve's. Other than that, I do love a Roman numeral, and only a Cartier Santos might scratch that itch. I love the idea of a Reverso Duoface, too. Oh wait did I mention...

I'm getting closer to completion having ramped up buying over the last few years to the point where I want to consolidate. Two completion watches for me, on of which I am now on a waiting list for and another will complete my IWC hat trick.

If I sold everything including myself?

This would be an acceptable one watch for the rest of my days in return ...

I'm not the biggest fan of Patek but that is stunning!

Interesting thread especially in light of recent events for me...and I have a thread on the idea of a 'destination watch' which is not (quite) the same thing. Further travel is allowed once you have reached your destination :)

The idea in fact never even occurred to me until I had it in my hand. 'So this is where my journey has led me' kinda thing. I once explored the notion of a grail but I think that is a dead end. For me.

The different takes here on the watch journey is fascinating and the way the inhabitants of this virtual place can freely discuss this is brilliant!
Side note: lovely to see the Lange Auf und Ab showing its face here: a watch I have had the privilege of having on my wrist at a club event. Almost as special as its price tag. But not at my pay grade :)

I've been admiring available ones on Chrono24. The best news is you get tool free springbars for your £85k.

Good idea for a thread.

I like to think my collection has most of the key 'slots' filled, sport chrono, dress chrono, nicer diver, beater diver, bracelets/straps/leathers, a few GADA, some titanium, a GMT, some more EDC, a few mechaquartz to grab and go, etc... and now with the Loco on the way, I've got something with some horological embellishment, that certainly fills a new slot entirely.

I've got a secondary box like most of you here, but my core-dozen as they are, all get at least some regular wrist time.

Of course while there are hundreds (limitless) of watches out there that I would love to own, realistically I should be in the one-in-one-out phase of collecting at this point. Unless something comes along and creates it's own place in my collection, I don't really lust after the big brands, or grand complications.

I think "completion" for me at this point would be something in yellow gold with some character, maybe a Moser or Lange if my crypto moons, or something like a Chronoswiss Delphis or vintage JLC if I retire poor.

Do I currently have a completion watch? I'm not sure that I do.

Have I ever, in the past, searched out what I thought to be my completion watch? I could count a small number of Omega Seamaster lines- the white teak dial Aqua Terra - sold it last year, the blue teak dial Aqua Terra Skyfall - it sits in the Omega box right now, the Speedmaster Flightmaster - it shares drawer space with the other Omegas and I've had the occasional collywobbles when I've imagined letting it and the "Flightmaster Only" reference book go but I stop myself some way short of the checkouts. Phew! 8)

When it comes to CW watches, and rather out of the blue, it's clear that I have attained a state of completion. I've never been fully enamoured with the present C60 handset and I've instigated a programme of letting go a number of watches simply to relieve myself of the first world discomfit of looking at hands which I don't enjoy. Bel Canto? I still need to handle one but until then I continue to defer any interest. The Loco? It'll depend how I feel about it when it arrives.

Do I have any desire to swim up other brand streams? I seem to be immune: maybe that's a good thing, who knows?

Maybe I've reached a state of completion without needing there to be an icon: ask me next month

I posted earlier in this thread that I had 3 possible completion watches:
Rolex Sub 14060
Rolex Explorer 14270
CW C5 aviator, mk1, black

I hope the CW will be first one I get (if I ever find one). Having attained that, the next completion watch will probably be the Explorer. And then the Sub will follow.

After that there will be a 4th completion watch, too, though I haven't decided what that one will be yet.

I really don't have one.

I would love the two tone Seamaster 300 that I saw in a jewellers (black and gold, not blue and gold, and on a bracelet) marked down from 11500 to 8000 (rough pricing). The watch and the fit was great. My wife even said "get it", but I passed. Even if I had got it, it wouldn't have been completion though.

I also think I would like a Reverso, but I might settle for a Longines Dolce Vita, or an Oris Rectangular, but that definitely would a completion watch.

I think it depends on the financial situation I'd potentially be in.

If I win the lottery... A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Perpetual in 750 White Gold (Ref: 410.038 E)
Image

If I stay on my current financial trajectory... Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch "Sapphire Sandwich" (Ref: 310.30.42.50.01.002)
