Neither, just pointing out when I think a post is crass and judgemental.

If someone feels the need to judge people on their dress and/or address, then that is judgemental and snobbish.

It is also incorrect.

With regards to the expat comment. I have worked in the far East and the Middle East. Many out there wore replicas, many wore gens.

Income had little bearing on their decision.

Many people with sufficient wealth to wear Rolex or other high end brands don't necessarily confirm to the stereotype of looking smart wearing a suit.

Many of the clients I dealt with before I retired would come in for a meeting wearing jeans and T-shirt. The level of their wealth was such that they didn't have to conform. I would be far more likely to think fake if it was someone wearing a cheap suit. :)

For what it's worth I don't agree with what Jack said either. I just don't feel like roasting the guy.

Fair point and diplomatic as ever Steve. :)

Maybe I am being a bit harsh.

Recently I've seen a lot of Rolex in the wild. Mostly Datejust's and the odd Daytona and this is out around Manchester and Middleton close to Manchester where I live. My next door neighbour has a bi metal datejust and so does my female 23 year old hair dresser. They could be fakes. But who would wear a fake watch?

I had a similar experience picking up a watch from my local post office(in a convenience store). Noticed the clerk wearing a two tone sub. I found myself thinking is it fake, did he re-mortgage the store to buy it, or is this place a front?

I know it's wrong to judge, but I was searching for a Submariner on Gumtree, I found one with no box or papers for £2.2k. The advert included a photo of the watch on the fellas wrist, in which his shorts and trainers were visible, had I seen a pair of smart trousers and shoes, I would have been more inclined to meet this fella and take a closer look.
I presumed it was Fake or Stolen based on his dress sense.
Thank God he avoided a suit, because I may have been really sucked in or got a Serious Bargain.
Make up your own mind here https://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/role ... 1188007055.

jack wrote:This thinking fake is a bit of a naive proposition. It depends on who is wearing it, and to an extent where you happen to
be. I live in an affluent British spa town and good watches are common place. I doubt there are any/many fakes around here.
If you live in a place where there is a low average income and unemployment and you see your bimetal
Sub, you may well be looking at a fake.

Same with travel. If you are out in the middle east and see a western guy sporting a Rolex he's probably in a good job or a consultant like me and the watch will almost definitely be gen. if you are on the costa del sol and see a young guy in a silly hair cut and primark shorts/ football shirt wearing a bi metal Rolex he got it on his last trip there for 50 euro.

I love wearing my blue Yachtmaster and my sub and I dress well too.
As someone who currently lives in Dubai I'll have to weigh in here.

In Dubai you find nice watches on people's wrists everywhere. However, anyone can quite possible be wearing a gen or replica as both are abundantly available here. So one cannot quickly assume based on other factors. Especially since people tend to dress up and try to look the Dubai part regardless of financial situation.

I try when possible to tell by looking at the watch only, usually a ticking seconds hand is the dead giveaway.

That being said I do genuinely hate the abundance of replicas here. I have worked hard to be able to purchase my watches and cater a collection to compliment the image id like to have for myself. So it does irritate me to no end that someone with a replica can have people thinking his is a genuine or worse that due to the abundance of replicas people think mine are replicas too.
