What do you think?

Post by downer »

Just looking around at prices for the Explorer, I came across this seller on ebay....

This guy seems to be located very close to my workplace, and I considered contacting him to arrange to have a look... However, spending this amount of cash without a cast-iron dealer back-up seems a bit silly to be honest.

When I looked at his other items for sale, I just begin to wonder how these guys source these watches?

Any thoughts?

5 weeks old and £1,000 off. Sounds too good to be true. And he is very insistent that he does not want scammers. Can you not organise a meeting at an AD? If he refuses then you have your answer.

Thing is, even if the watch is genuine, would the back up be as good as buying new from my own AD???

I hadn't read your last sentence at the time but immediately looked at his own buys. Where, as you says does he get them?

Looking at his name, stevenfromsweden, perhaps the answer lies further afield.

Might be cheap but I wouldn't touch him either.

In one of his other listings (Rolex Daytona), he states... "CAN HAVE THE WATCH VERIFIED AT ANY ROLEX DEALER IF NEEDED."...

Curious.

If you were getting £20 off a Seiko 5 it would be worth a punt, but a Rolex, I'd stick with the AD (as long as we are spending your money of course).

My gut feeling would be to let this one go. As you, say, there might be a worry about backup.

That makes sense to me on a deal where you stand to lose a lot more than you would gain.

Proceed with caution, Richard.

I wouldn't insult your intelligence downer but I smilingly think of Jimbo's 3 word thread:

Buy the Seller.

Don't misunderstand me... I'm not going anywhere near it... but I just wondered how these people get hold of these watches. I'm intrigued.

Why not phone him and, depending how you feel once speaking with him, arrange to meet and see it. If nothing else it may satisfy your curiosity.

The eBay picture shows a Goldsmiths receipt, meet there with the receipt could be a start. Then again can you get a discount at an AD with cash, if so your not getting £1k off with all the risk, you might be saving £400 with little backup.
