+1 for the C65 Vintage! That’s what my wife got me as a wedding gift. It’s the right size. The design is clean, classic, elegant. And it easily adapts to any situation. A quick change of the strap can dress it up or dress it down. A C65 Vintage with the addition of a quality leather dress strap would be well within budget. And with the additional strap could do double duty - the strap it came on for everyday casual wear, and the nicer leather strap for when it needs to be dressed up a bit. That’s what I do!

What age? Are they an office person by trade or something else? Any idea on general style (trendy disruptive type, etc)?

It's all well asking for suggestions but it's a minefield if he's going to wear it longer term...

My suggestion would be this Oris.

Congratulations to your friend.

How about another shout for a Longines. This one is a little over budget but I know where to find an immaculate pre-used one for that price.

i'm a little biased, but i'd second some of the junghans suggestions, but move sideways to the meister line as well as the max bill. really depends on his personal style, but this looks amazing with a tux.
the "g" is for Greg...
