Re: I've Done Something Irresponsible
So those of you who were guessing Omega had it right...
I think most of you know that Omega has been a tricky brand for me. I completely and totally recognize the brand as a heavyweight, but every Omega that I've looked at in the steel until now has been a bit of a disappointment. It's hard to deny the simplistic brilliance of the Speedmaster, but it's never quite called out to me. This one was different.
I went into my local Omega AD (which is a Tourneau shop), hoping that they might have the Blue Planet Ocean Titanium Liquid Metal. I was hopeful that this Omega would be the one for me, so I entered the shop with moderately high expectations. They had the 37.5 mm model, but after looking at it on my wrist, I decided that my fears were realized and I just didn't like it all that much. It was nice enough but not for me. And then I asked about the price. $8500. Yeah, no thank you.
So then, I looked over at the corner of the Omega display where the Speedmasters were. They must have had 7 or 8 of them. In the front was The Moonwatch at $4400 and tucked in the corner was The Speedmaster Racing Yellow at $4800. A few months ago, I had identified the Racing Yellow as another possibility, but my hopes were tempered by my general outlook on Omegas. The Racing also comes in Blue and Red models, but I ruled those out rather quickly.
I had the associate pull out both. I sat there and considered for a painfully long time. I liked the Moonwatch, and I knew that it'd be a great choice in terms of straight up Omega WIS cred. Manual wind. Moonwatch. Classic. And a touch less expensive than the Racing to boot. But in the end, I couldn't get passed the fact that it was the Racing that was calling out to me more.
So, here it is:
The Omega quality is pretty darn apparent on first wear. The detailing is great. I love the yellow accents, which is exactly what the watch needs for me to give it that little bit of flair to separate it from the traditional Speedmaster. The off-black dial color is also more my style. The bracelet is wonderful as gwells led me to believe it would be the last time we GTG'd and talked about his AT. At 40mm, it is the ideal size for me. I wish I could magically resize all of my watches to this size. On some level, I'd have been happy with a manual movement, but I'm perfectly content with the auto 3330. The only thing about this watch that isn't perfect for me is that I wish they had also gone with a yellow hand for the seconds subdial. The unadorned steel second hand is a little bit challenging to see in some lights. But this is a minor quibble as in most lights, it's fine.
I really wasn't planning on this purchase even though it was on my possibility list, and this means that I really really need to put the clamp on things for a while. I got about a 10% cut on the price, so that helps, but I'll probably need to sell a piece or two to help justify this one.
But I'm pretty sure that this is indeed the Omega for me. Love it so far.

Re: I've Done Something Irresponsible
great pictures. i've slowly begun to love the speedmaster more and more. i think i'd be more at one of the extremes, like a dark side of the moon or a birth year (63) white face, but that looks great on you. and grats on the purchase.
you know, some day, if you really think you'd like a yellow subdial seconds hand, you could probably get someone to mod it for you.

Congratulations on another fine acquistion - a watch to grace any collection, and a fine combination of tradition and sportiness.
The 40mm size looks about perfect and the quality of the watch is clear to see.
Good choice!

Beautiful. It's my favourite of the current Speedmaster range, and the one I would have gone for.
I do like a bit of yellow on a watch, too!
