Full Circle

Post by downer »

Back in 2005, I was pretty much a one-watch guy.

This was my watch:

A Citizen Promaster 200m w/r, decent quality quartz, with legibility as a key strength.

Since then, more than 100 watches have come and gone, but it seems my tastes have not really evolved.

This is my latest:

This one is titanium and green, but otherwise… :)

I like them both Richard. Legibility is certainly not an issue.
Out of curiosity do you still have the first one?

A familiar face, better the devil you know, a comforting friend. An intriguing circumnavigation.

Is this at the expense of your Bremonts?

@downer I notice with the latest addition your "always buy on a bracelet" rule still applies!

The Promaster is a good solid watch. Before I really got into watches I had a Citizen Eco Drive on a bracelet that I got for half price in a sale, maybe £150. I really liked that watch and somewhat wish I still owned it.

@downer

Nice one. What superb legibility for what I suspect is >95% of your needs.

Maybe time to add a new rule: “Exercise some commonsense!” :D

Yes, as I get older I wonder if there’s a shortage of that particular commodity?

There's a lesson in there somewhere. The watch universe is conspiring to tell you something, I'm not sure what it is though.

I don’t think tastes really change much from when you first take an interest in something which probably explains why people end up with a collection of “divers” or “pilot watches” of various different values.

It’s probably another big reason why you should never take it personal when someone is quite harsh in their criticism of a watch you own, all they are really doing it is seeing it through their own personal tastes rather than quality, build, movement etc…

Ah, the troublesome etiquette of reacting to someone’s new pride and joy when you don’t like it. A thorny question… :-k

I tend to think of this question in three categories:

1. Love the watch and would buy it myself = easy positive reaction
2. Appreciate the watch but not one for me = again, quite easy to react positively with appreciation of the watch even if I wouldn't buy it
3. Don't like it = no comment required

I had the thorny issue in the case of @downer's original post that I think I actually prefer the watch from 2005 to the current purchase. I preferred the case shape on the older one and find the hands a little too big on the newer one. Thought about writing is as a comment but didn't want to appear negative on the more recent purchase, so I'm glad I have said nothing. :D
