You mentioned you might be reluctant to wear something like a JLC… but you do talk a lot about your dream watch being a reverso! Do you think maybe if you got this instead of a JLC you’d feel at least a little disappointed? Unfulfilled?

That’s a reasonable question, and I can confidently say no. While the Reverso is a dream watch, that’s honestly all it has ever been. I’ve never seriously entertained the thought of owning one. No matter how much I love the watch, I could never bring myself to spend that kind of money on a watch, nor could I in good conscience wear a watch that cost so much. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t judge at all anyone who owns and wears high-end luxury watches. If anything, I enjoy that experience vicariously on this forum. I just know myself. I think the Longines is in the range of something I’d feel comfortable buying and wearing.

Now, if I inherited money or won money with the express instructions to spend it on something indulgent, I’d probably be able to buy something like a Reverso, but I know I’d still be too nervous/paranoid/uncomfortable to wear it. That’s just me; YMMV.

Right on! Not taking anything away from the Longines of course. It’s a very fine luxury watch in its own right, a beautiful piece from a high end brand with a lot of history.

I used to feel very much like that Andrew. Fifteen or twenty odd years ago I sold a couple of NOS Seikos as I felt they were too nice to potentially scratch them them by wearing them (today me… Duh!). They were just ordinary run of the mill Seikos, enhanced only in my mind by the fact that they were 20 or so years old, but still pristine, so they were in some way “special” (or maybe even just delicate), but they weren’t even particularly valuable. So I totally understand the feeling.

These days the normal everyday watch on my wrist is likely to be an Omega as it seems I wear one more days than not. So I’ve gone from being unwilling to risk a couple of inexpensive Seikos on my wrist to wearing and enjoying any and all of the watches I own, including some NOS Omegas I’ve bought over the years that have been closer to 50, rather than 20 years old. It took me a little while, but over time, you may become more comfortable with the idea. Or not. Time will tell, but there are no rights or wrongs, only what is best at the time for you.

I’d still be unwilling to sell my entire collection and buy a PP or a VC or something outrageously expensive. Wearing the value of my entire collection on my wrist at one time is still a step too far (and will almost certainly remain so). Besides, then I’d only have one watch, so I’d have to to buy a beater, then a nicer beater and then the cycle resumes….

Edit: In summary, dream of the Reverso, buy and wear the Longines and revisit the Reverso later, should your views change. If it’s still a dream watch then.

..and the new Sector Tanks (Dolcevitas)? ....if I were you, I would go for the Longines Dolcevita over the Hammy Boulton

I’ve got to give a shout out to Chuck (Thunder1) for turning me on to the Longines Dolcevita. I emailed him to see if he had or knew much about the Hamilton Boulton, since he has a magnificent collection of Hamiltons.

This led to a nice conversation about likely retirement watches for me in two years and him suggesting look at the Longines Dolcevita, based on that conversation. I’d heard of it but hadn’t investigated it too much. After Chuck’s suggestion and a little looking around on the interwebs, it’s now moved up to a top spot on the retirement watch list. It checks a great many of the boxes:

• Luxury brand
• but not too luxury that I’d be reluctant to own and wear it (I’m looking at you, Cartier & JLC!)
• Rectangular case
• Dressy but not too dressy
• a vintagy, Art Deco-like vibe
• Significantly different from my wedding watch
• Not a watch I’d be inspired to wear daily

We’ll see how this plays out over the next two years.

Two maybe 3ish.

Omega Seamaster white dial on a bracelet. Every time I see one, I get a little weak in the knees.

I'm in Chronograph mode if for no other reason than to just have one. The C60 Chronograph is at the top of that list. If it was black/red or all black, I would have pre-ordered one already.

The 3rdish is the Hamilton Intra-Matic Chronograph Auto with panda dial. It's dropped to #2 on the Chrono list after discovering Christopher Ward dive watches.
