Trying to genuinely help....Might I suggest having a read of Downers Rules of Watch collecting and I believe Rule#6 might come into play!

^^^ I have to agree, you’ll probably end up still wanting the Explorer if you buy the Smiths. Either save for the Exp or, as you’ve hinted at, slim the collection down to fund/part fund it. In my opinion, a small collection of watches you really enjoy beats a large collection of ‘make do’s’ - on that, I’m speaking from experience over the last few years and have been in the ‘slimming the collection down’ phase for the last 12 months. Downers rules aren’t ‘The Oracle’ but they ain’t far off it - some of the best advice you’ll read I reckon.

Thank You. The thing is, I don't consider the Smiths to be a substitute. However, the Explorer is my 'grail' watch. Problem is if I went for the Explorer I would obviously want to wear and enjoy it on a reasonably frequent basis, which probably means reducing the collection from 12 to 10. And I like all of my watches!
As they say - first World problems!

Tough one!
I actually don’t see it as a homage of the modern explorer but very much of the 1016 from 40 odd years ago. I think the smiths is a nice looking watch and at 36mm quite appropriate
Cheers now, Paul

Timefactors have actually tweaked the design slightly. This is the latest version.
As you say, it's not a copy of the current Explorer - especially the 36mm.Image

Thanks Chris - all good advice.
I have little to no chance of getting a new Explorer from AD's and have already been given the 'waiting lists closed / come in and register interest / do you have a sales history ...... etc talk!
So I guess I'm in the used market. And the latest version is currently on offer at around £1K over retail ..... gulp!

It makes me wonder whether Rolex pricing (and some others, but chiefly Rolex) is indicative of a bubble waiting to be pricked. They make a lot of watches, so they aren't really scarce. The watches themselves are good/great, but fall short of the higher reaches of excellence. so we are told. I won't be rushing to pay a premium for an already expensive watch. Mind you 1K over retail isn't too bad if its something your really want. A lot of models are a lot more than 1K over retail, though.

Alternatively, in the last few days I watched fantastic videos of Richard Perrett (Rolex) and Nekkid (Cartier Tank) restoring some desperate looking watches, and it's amazing what a great watchmaker can do. There are a lot of examples online. Maybe there's an alternative in buying and restoring a less expensive older watch, rather than getting a new one.

If you like the Smiths so go for it. With the price difference I don't think the rules of not buying something which is a substitute always applies, unless you are the price of the Smiths away from buying the explorer. Or you are going to buy 10+ more watches and repeat this process in a short period of time and not get anything from this watch. I'd love a Vacheron overseas but not buying a few CW's won't get me much closer and I need to be able to count the time as I wait out the number of years to save!

The Smiths is pretty hard to get from their website and doesn't seem to lose too much money on the second hand market so you don't have much to lose. If the Rolex opportunity comes up or you manage to sell a number of watches to get there later just add the Smiths to that list and enjoy it in the meantime

Well now Chris, I guess I can blame you for my pre-order of the same watch based on your previous post on it in this thread. :D
I am rather looking forward to seeing it in real life, it shows quite a bit of promise. And contrary to expectations I did not order it in green. ;)

Blame accepted :) I think the Essence 39 is a properly interesting and handsome piece. Looking forward to that one. Degrade for me.
And another alignment in our collections - the Direnzo Eclipse being another - really enjoying that. I seem to be a few Omegas behind though! There IS an Aqua Terra, 38mm white dial that has me drooling I must confess. BB58 first.

Jon and Neil will have to cop more blame for something much more expensive....

Chris thank you for clarifying what I am being blamed for!

At one point I thought I was being blamed for the Essence 39 - one that you had already ordered before I even mentioned that I like it; in response to your post. :)

To help ensure that you don’t change your mind on the BB58 I seem to recall that a forumite did a side by side review of a couple of his dive watches, in which the BB58 compared favourably with its big brother. :D

Maybe a Corgeut might be a temporary solution. It will definitely cost rather less. Display back to show off the humble movement as well.

Thanks JAFO. I am aware of that one. I do have a couple of Chinese (Pagani) "homages" and it's a 50:50 call. The "Daytona" is terrific, the "Batman" not so much...Weirdly, I bought the "Batman" to scratch the 4-hander itch which it doesn't (the desire for a C65 GMT steel bezel is enhanced) and the Daytona Panda was just too cheap NOT to buy at the same AliExpress special. That watch I enjoy just for what it is with reference to nothing. 55 quid English money and I make no apologies for it being enjoyed so much... :)

So where does the "blame" come from? I had indeed read that "certain forumite"'s post comparing to his Subby. And took note. When said forumite posted later in the thread "most worn watches in 2020" it made his top 3 I took notice. Ticking boxes is one thing, but picking it up from the watchbox regularly when you have an array of fine choices is another. So on to the shortlist the BB58 went.

Then: on my birthday Jon reveals the new acquisition. I am a kharma kinda guy. I contacted my AD of choice (Hourglass in Sydney) and got myself on the list. It's a way of doing things that rubs me up the wrong way I must say, but if you want something, being churlish about it is not helpful. So there it is.
