The most unfortunate watch name of 2013 award goes to.....
So, this week I received an email / link to the latest offerings from Ferrari's merchandise machine. As some of you know I am a petrolhead and have indeed purchased items / gifts before and had a Ferrari watch in my time.
However, the new range contains an interesting new quartz chrono watch model in deference to the first Ferrari Grand Tourer - The '166 Inter'. How Ferrari's global marketing team didn't spot the fact that the name wouldn't read well in the English speaking world when plastered across a watch dial coupled with the italian word for 'road', I will never know, but made me 'laugh out loud' as the kids say... link below:

Q - What would you like for Christmas?
A - The InterCorsa watch please! (sounds better in an Italian accent, trust me)
Germaine suggestions welcomed from CWF members for the follow up line!

Toyota found it hard to sell the MR2 in France until they realised that when pronounced, it sounded like 'merde' which is an impolite way of saying faeces in their language.
Similarly GPT found the French market hard, then realised that when pronounced it sounded like 'I have passed wind'.
NOT to be sniffed at!
(Both of the above are bowdlerised)

I'm sure many know the Mitsubishi Shogun is known elsewhere in the world as the Pajero.
Eh, not in Spain as the translation of Mitsubishi Pajero is Mitsubishi ****.

InterCorsa watch?
Presumably its a Reverso knockoff, since it's a Ferrari product?
Dare I mention the VW Toerag and the Lamborghini Mucilage?
No, I thought not...

Or the Vauxhall/Opel Nova which had to be renamed as No Va means doesn't go in spanish.
Not a good name for a watch, no.

The "Nova" one is the odd one out as it's just an urban myth. AVO would be able to explain, but it's also debunked and explained on Snopes. The Pajero one is, I believe, partly/mostly true, depending on how hard of softly the J is pronounced. Again, I'd need a linguist to help me out.
There are some other car models that hit similar language barriers, but they are less well known models.

Kia were planning to launch a car called the "Provo" but it won't be called this in the UK because it would be reminiscent of the Provisional IRA who were known as "The Provos" here in N. Ireland.

Not sure what you want me to explain? "No va" means it doesn't go.Richard B wrote:The "Nova" one is the odd one out as it's just an urban myth. AVO would be able to explain,

So it's correct and credible?
Cool!
The only Spanish I know is: una cervesa pour favor
And I'm not sure that's perfect, but it helped a Majorcan holiday go by in a blurr!

Wikipedia suggests you are correct in that it is an urban myth. I'll have to stop using that as an example then!Richard B wrote:The "Nova" one is the odd one out as it's just an urban myth. So instead how about the ford pinto (brazilian slang for small gentleman sausage according to the bbc)

AVO reckons you're right all along, so apologies for dissing your post!
