Speedy indeed! Demag solutions?

Post by Amor Vincit Omnia »

“Oh I say, dearie me, that is somewhat annoying!*”

*Substitute your own version.

These, give or take a little latitude, were my words when I glanced at my Speedy on hearing the 4 o’clock bell today. Having set it to this morning, it was two minutes fast. Sure enough, when I brought a pocket compass up to the watch, it veered immediately round to WSW like the proverbial trireme in Charybdis.

So, can anyone recommend a reasonable demagnetiser at a reasonable cost? Do those cheaper ones you can buy from places like Cousins actually work? Any recommendations gratefully received. Thank you.

I would sure hope anything from Cousins would do the job they specify.

Any idea how you came to magnetise the Speedy?

I got mine, Swiss Made, from Cousins too.

Was inclined to avoid the generic Far Eastern ones on Amazon and eBay.

Steve, if you have a watchmaker or jeweler that you frequent, they likely have a demagnetiser, and may be inclined to do the job for you for free or very little money. As I understand it this is a 1-2 minute job.

Hi Steve,

I initially purchased the cheap, blue device in the bottom of the attached picture for around $10 from Amazon. It was dead on arrival. I gulped and paid about $80 for the gray device in the top of the picture, also from Amazon. It worked like a charm, and I have used it a few more times on my old watches. My experience suggests to stay away from the cheap devices, but I know others have found success with them.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Thanks for the helpful suggestions, gents.

Guy, it would be great if you could post or PM a link to the one you bought at Cousins. Cheers.

Chris, good suggestion about the watchmaker – thank you. It is sometimes a bit difficult to get into town which is why I thought of having one at home.

It seems to have calmed down a little, but still way out. I set it at 8 pm last night and after 10 hours it had gained 30 seconds.

It has always been around +8 or +9 for 24 hours ever since I got it.

For what it's worth, there's plenty of magnetic things around us these days. Small ones, granted, but lots! Our phones/tablets have magnets for the speakers and possibly also for cases, which our wrists will be near at points through the day. The doors we have here at work have big magnetic locks at around wrist height too...
I may have to get one of these too; although I've had my recently inherited speedy serviced and demagnetised I'm pretty sure this'll be an issue for me in a shorter time than that between services...

Not sure where you are based but the Omega Boutique on regent st did mine, I even got a couple of coffees for me and my brother while we waited.

(I've always used the cheap £10 one from Ebay since and its worked fine though)

2 months or so ago, an Oris, that I have had for some time, and then my C8PR started running fast. Both within a week of each other. No changes to my daily routine that I could think of. So I purchased a de-mag unit, found on ebay, and it seemed to work perfectly. I then rearranged the position of a few things in my watch box, removing my one quartz citizen, which used to be parked directly next to these two and haven't had a problem since. Doubtful that was the culprit, but anything's possible. Any thoughts?
