Yes Omega have been rather milking the Limited Edition format recently. The only thing they've managed to do is cause a highly inflated "pre-owned" market, Watchfinder already advertising a Speedy Tuesday for sale (POA so about £10k probably) along with the Snoopy Award (POA again so also about £10k-ish) and a couple of other LE Speedys (or is it Speedies?)

Yes. That and the subdials sit further away from the centre of the dial, much closer to the edge of the dial.

For the non-Omega aficionado, hésalite, or as I write it  hesalite, is Omega's name for acrylic. The moonwatch comes with a sapphire crystal as well, but it's the hesalite that went to the moon... the choice of which has been discussed elsewhere, so I'm not getting into it here.

The two crystals are not interchangeable (crystal mount in the case is different for each), so you make your choice and stick with it...

What's the story with the 1861 calibre? Does the suggestion that this IS the best mean that the other cals are, er, not so good?

Hesalite? Unobtainium? Que?

There we have it folks. There is The One Speedy and then there are all the other models.

Assuming that I do what you suggest, the plan will be to do this on/after retirement later this year. That gives me time to think about how to make room on the shelf.

Where to start... 1861 is the same as the earlier 861 except for one extra jewel (well, apart from a very few late 861s that had it as well), rhodium plating instead of red gold plating. Apart from the additional digit stamped on the movement, that's about it.

Edit: the 861 is a more easily serviced, slightly simpler and I dare say, potentially more reliable version of the original 321. Not that it was in any way unreliable! End Edit...

Sapphire is much more scratch resistant than hesalite, but most scratches can be removed from hesalite in a few minutes with polywatch and some vigorous rubbing. A broken sapphire is also significantly more expensive to replace and/or repair than a deeply scratched hesalite - note I say scratched, as it's almost, but not quite impossible to break one.

The one? No, I'd argue that point, as you may get the bug. Six of my nine Speedys are moonwatches. Beware...

It's an intriguing thought that the Moonwatch frequently comes up in discussion for a 'special' purchase.

Far more than a Sub, El Primo or Tudor.

Rolex Sub: not bothered. Complete brand disinterest in fact.

Tudor: not feeling the lerv. See above.

El Primo: hmm. Could get sweaty palms for something like this Image

Possibly 3 reasons Guy. :)
- More folk think they are an astronaut than they are James Bond.
- A Submariner is likely to cost you twice as much as a Speedmaster Moonwatch.
- No one other than a fellow WIS is likely to recognise the Speedy.
