Any thoughts on the discounts that could be available on the remaining 1861’s? 15% appears to be about the best online but I have an appointment at an AD and wondered whether there was much hope of them matching that...

You should be able to get anything from 10-20% depending on your relationship and how much they want the business.

Lockdown and online ordering has shown that the AD experience isn’t really worth the premium!

Thanks for that.

My thinking is that because they (Mappin & Webb) are not accepting walk in customers, only pre-booked single appointments at 30 minute intervals, they might be more willing to make a deal and secure a sale.......we shall see!

Well they will certainly be hoping that your heart rules your head and that you will want to walk out with the item once you have it in your hands.

Try not to let emotion rule your decision making. If you aren’t impressed with the deal walk away.

As well as straight discount you could ask for extras like straps, a free service etc

In my part of northern NJ getting a discount on an 1861 is difficult. They are being bought like crazy by folks who are treating them as an investment. As the supply dries up the discounts are going away. My memory of dealing with ADs and not owned boutiques in the US is that the discounts are similar (~7%) so what you're effectively getting is a discount of the sales tax (in NJ).

I have thought long and hard about a sapphire sandwich, but I just can't bring myself to pay 3500 to 4000 plus for a nearly new one. I thought about the 44mm speedmaster racing as well but it's slightly dearer. I just know I can have so much fun with CW and others with 4000.

Addendum to my last. I would be interested in others thoughts on this.

If you've seen the watch a number of times and keep going back to see it again, then consider buying.
If you have doubts, don't buy.

So I went to buy a watch, and the man in the shop said "Analogue." I said "No, just a watch."

Ouch, glad I just bought my SMP in time. Strange time for a price increase though, not exactly going to boost sales in a depressed market.

Damn, I was hoping to have more time to save for an SMP especially after the white dials that have appeared here lately!

I've never bought from an AD before, how do you guys manage to sweet talk your way to a discount? If I purchase soon it's likely to be from Goldsmiths or similar.

Getting a discount is mostly self-confidence and the perceived interest from the salesperson. I think it helps to wear a watch (a nice one if possible and a CW counts as they won't have seen one before). Spend time show interest and then just ask. You are armed with the fact that you know that discounts are available and what to expect. They will want to sell watches and if they think you are a live prospect then the discount should be forthcoming. The US word is "chutzpah" but the reality is that if you don't ask, you won't get.

Thanks for this, also hoping that having bought my wife's engagement and wedding rings at Goldsmiths they will appreciate the repeat custom!

So do I wear the Abyss or Bronze :-k

I was in Goldsmiths last weekend ordering an adjustable clasp for my new Omega Seamaster 300 chronograph (previous 3 sub dial model) and was wearing a CW C60 Trident Elite 1000 LE picked up in the recent sale and the assistant manager who was dealing with me did notice it and commented nice watch and was aware of the brand. Didn't help with any discount on the clasp but nice that he noticed!
