Hi... So, it looks like you've chosen to take the Rolex route? Thanks for getting me to take a closer look at the Milgauss, I think it's a cracker of a watch. How do you think it holds up in their pantheon of great watches? For me it's a very unique piece that steps outside of their 'reserved/traditional' hand that we are very used to seeing. I hope the wait doesn't end up being too long, would you look at second hand?

I've yet to actually see one in the metal, but assuming it looks as good as in pics then yes I'd go for it. That said, the funds I've earmarked for it aren't confirmed yet, so it could end up just be wishful thinking.

I don't hold myself to be any kind of expert, but there are plenty that Rolex make that are far too shouty for my taste. That's the attraction of the Explorer 1 for me - nicely undertstated. I think the Milgauss will fall in the 'quirky not OTT' category.

As to second hand, I do rather like the brand new experience, but with availability being what it is that may prove problematic. In that case I suspect my eye would wander to something else.

As a former owner of a z-blue Milgauss, I will say it’s gorgeous, lovely watch, but the second hand is the reason I ended up selling it. For me, it was a failed experiment, but for many it’s an object of desire. And it has NO cyclops…

Ive owned a few over the years- most recently a ceramic GMT (black bezel/green gmt hand) and there’s no doubting to me that they’re good quality, solid and robust watches that are extremely reliable.

I’m not anti them, but the issue for me is that the market values them more than I do. So a Rolex at a bit under list price would be a great proposition to me, £4K for a well made steel sports watch is great. But if I had one (let’s say a no date submariner or Explorer39)- and the opportunity to sell it for £9-11k would be too hard to pass. Not because I’m an evil flipper chasing money- but because for that money I could get a JLC triple calendar and a bb58 which is a better proposition. At some point they’re just worth more to others than they are to me so unless I was gifted one I’d end up selling it for something better + a bb58 😄

Been in to numerous ADs recently and all had none for sale, just a few in each window 'for exhibition purposes only'. One of these was a brand new Sub. Quite surreal. When will this weird bubble burst?

I would be an evil flipper chasing money.

If I could grab one or two of those at cost and sell them at what the market thinks they’re worth, I wouldn’t bother with chasing down other watches. I would use the profits to finance my travel habit for a while.

This is a long recent discussion by Tim Mosso touching on Rolex, other brands, and various other things. Not just Rolex, but I thought this is a reasonable place to add it a link. Among other things, he explores pricing levels attaining to brands, differences between SS and precious metals. I found it all fascinating.

If it were not for your endorsement I would have switched off, given the first 4 minutes was a dig at TOP GEAR. Thank you for sharing the link.

A watch buddy of mine has scored three sports models from various ADs since July. First a Milgauss out of state, then a BLNR on Jubilee two weeks ago, and yesterday he got the call for the Polar Explorer II.

That’s some streak!!

Thanks. If I am looking to buy something I always look out for his WatchBox review of the model. He is one of few who mention everything about the model you would want to know.

I haven’t seen any of the longer WatchBox Studio content like this before. He certainly knows his stuff. Some of the prices of the hot models indicate just how mad the pricing has become over the past two years. There are probably plenty out there that bought the hot models a few years ago, fully expecting to take a bath if they subsequently sold. Turns out they have done ok.

I had the day off on Friday so was in town and popped into a few AD's, not just Rolex. The two Rolex AD's just had "exhibition watches" on display. They were both waiting for the next delivery from Rolex so essentially just had watches left that have been promised to customers but were on display at the moment pending the next delivery.

The good thing was that many of the popular models that you will never see in a Rolex AD window were there and could be tried on - Explorer, Explorer 2, GMT Master II, Submariner, Yachtmaster etc. I tried on both a black dial Explorer 2 as well as a GMT Master II BLNR (Batman).

I was told Rolex have actually increased production by about 5% to try and alleviate supply issues. I'm not sure if this was mentioned earlier in the thread, but the AD's will only retain someone's note of interest in a difficult to obtain watch if they are already a known customer i.e. you have made purchases in the past from the AD, in order to weed out those who just want to buy a watch to flip for a profit. If this results in the genuine watch enthusiast being more likely to get a watch then that seems like a good move.

Ive heard this before Patrick, but I have to say my experience was the exact opposite.

I initially went in, in my work uniform, which as a railway man, aint exactly gucci!!! They registered my interest but they didnt have my DJ in any case size at all, so I popped in a couple of times when they got another size in, just to see the dial in the flesh, but then to mess about deciding on which bracelet!

Im not sure if mine didnt fall in to the difficult to obtain pile, but they certainly didnt have any size of my Wimbledon in for several months.
Ive also heard each AD has a different way with their customers. Ive heard horror stories on here about ADs, but mine were absolutely spot on. They knew from the outset I wasnt someone who would be in there 2-3 times a year for another model but I was treated as if I was! No upselling etc that ive also heard about.

I guess in an "Ad lottery" as to the service and availability!!!

On another point, I think im possibly the only one that feels this way, but I actually had no problem waiting for mine.
I went in to Omega in the Trafford ctr not long ago and had a play with the AT. I adore them! The fact I could just hand over payment and walk out with one there and then somehow made it a little less special to me. Even though it was a £7k watch.
I use the term loosely, but I think I "enjoyed" the wait. It made it that bit more special when the call finally came in. I fully appreciate im alone on this view though!.

He probably got in his car and visited numerous AD’s up and down the country to do his research so he could add to the 64 posts and 48 thanks already posted in the 2 weeks on the forum  now that’s what I call dedication
