Retirement changes
Retirement changes
I retired several months ago and along with wanting to mark the occasion, I also wanted to realign my collection to reflect my changed life. I was not fixed on the style of watches because although I no longer need to wear a suit, I do like a dress watch and I do still involve myself in some ‘practical’ jobs, so both can be accommodated. More importantly I wanted quality over quantity.
I sold a couple of watches and intended to buy a Lumiere but I wanted to look at other options. I have always admired the JLC’s and Cartier’s posted here so I tried on some rectangular watches, and my plans changed.
After a great deal of research, more visits to AD’s, another watch sale (and more sales to come) I know own a JLC Reverso that I picked up six months old.
I have been fortunate to own a few good quality watches but I think everything about this watch appears fully considered and perfectly executed. The two dials offer a great contrast but both change with the light. The case is beautifully polished and ‘flipping’ from one face to another is fantastically engineered. Even the engraving inside the case adds to the aesthetic.
I was initially unsure about the case size and shape but I think it fits my wrist perfectly. I am though, conscious that it might be susceptible to scratching!!!
Sorry about the ramblings and it’s just my opinion anyway, here’s some pictures. Expect to see more in the coming weeks!

@Andyshall
You are to be congratulated on three things: your retirement; your exquisite taste in watches; and a fantastic acquisition…Wonderful!
A question, if I may: are the two dials independently adjustable to reflect different time zones?

Very nice, I’ve often looked at JLC’s and Cartier’s but I don’t think I’m classy enough to pull one off
Re: Retirement changes
That’s very kind of you Steve. I am missing not being in school but loving the freedom of being retired.

I don’t often use the word splendid, but that is. Quite the beauty.

Re: Retirement changes
Congratulations on an exquisite purchase. The Reverso is a watch I admire greatly and (with apologies to CWL and despite owning it myself) I think a much more fitting retirement watch than the Lumiere.
I post a few watch pictures now and then to a little Instagram account - 16 followers and counting!
Re: Retirement changes
Congratulations on your retirement. I hope it will be a long and happy one and that’s a great choice of watch to mark the occasion.

@Andyshall
Congratulations on the retirement. It is a wonderful milestone and the one piece of advice I have heard over and over is to not make any big changes in the first year as you get used to a new routine and lots of extra time to do all those things you never had time to get to while still working. Of course, changes to the watch collection do not count.
Job well done on the JLC because it is a beautiful watch and by purchasing pre-owned you probably avoided the massive depreciation that happened especially after JLY raised prices 40% not that long ago. That is the true first sports watch even if dressy by today's standards.

Re: Retirement changes
Congratulations Andy - I do like a Reverso and with a Duoface you end up with two for the price of one.
Enjoy retirement. Just remember that the Explorer is more suitable for hill or coastal walks, than the Reverso.

Re: Retirement changes
Firstly congratulations on your retirement; having done so 11 years ago, I'm of the opinion that it's a great stage of your life. Enjoy it!
Secondly, splendid watch. I've looked with envy at the various Reversos that I've seen yet studiously avoided buying one, as although I love a nice dress watch, I almost never wear them and would only end up selling it. It took me a while to learn that lesson, so it's nice to see someone who likes and actually wears dress watches get hold of a nice one (and this most certainly is) - it will be appreciated as it should be.
