I was tempted to add something facetious but I suddenly thought: there are an increasing but countable number of young people who don't know things that I have always taken for granted - how to use a footpump, take a tyre pressure, fill a fountain pen, how to adjust a pair of shears, repair an inner tube, sharpen a knife, hold a hammer, write a letter... So, how to wind and set a wristwatch when you have not owned a watch at all, or seen a clockwork device of any kind? The joy of a watch with a glass back cannot be overestimated. UB

ub you are so right! I am into clasic Minis and weld up the rusty shells and rebuild engines/gearboxes without a second thought, but kids these days dont even know how to wash a car decently, let alone wind/set a watch, what is the world coming to????

OK, but I wasn't trying to sound like an old fart, though I probably am... I work with older kids who will grow up to be money earning young men and women very soon, and their counterparts in whatever developed nation will probably share their lack of knowledge. I try to see the world as they might, not as I do. Lack of mechanical knowledge is no longer a hindrance; I detect from some a wish to know more, though. A mechanical watch might have that fascination, but how do you work it? So, someone has to tell them the basics... UB

Hello for the last time on this topic.

Personally I am British and though I would like to think my sarcasm was not lost,
well ,perhaps I was a little too subtle.

Hi, just a note in response to Terminator 2 and Leebman's observations about RLT's website. I think it's just a question of resources, I may be speaking out of turn but I get the impression that Roy is a watchmaker first and internet retailer second - as I'm sure you know, it takes a lot of time and effort to keep a website constantly updated.

I know from personal experience how irritating it can be to see 'sold out' repeatedly, however I would suggest you pick up the phone and discuss your requirements with him. In my limited experience of purchasing from him I have always found him to be helpful and courteous - not dissimilar to CW really.

Just my thoughts, Nick

I take it Roy is the owner ??? Since making the above comment I have come across the fact that RLT seems to be connected to a forum called The Watch Forum. My comment was nothing personal as I have had no dealings with either the forum or RLT. However as a casual observer who might have been a potential customer the site is pretty bad. I now get the impression that any watch he has ever dealt with remains on the site for ever but rather than as an archive they are posted as "Out Of Stock". It is really annoying if I can be brutally honest.

However RLT are not alone in doing this although to date for me at least they seem to be worse than most but any website that leaves their sold stock online is doing themselves no favours in my view. As a buyer I dont give a flying hoot as to what I missed out on. In fact it may annoy me even more that I missed out on it in the first place. RLT gets a special thumbs down award though because it has a search engine in its so called Store Section that allows me to look for things I cannot buy. There are even areas where every last piece of inventory is sold out. Worse still though is rather than saying " Sold " as others do the wording "Out of Stock " implies to the casual visitor that more will follow. Its not on if you ask me.

So this is my own opinion but I bet I am not alone at least as a customer. If he gets to hear this criticism then he might realise he is in fact losing business from those who do not know him. I am sure he is a lovely guy but first impressions may be the last impression you ever get the chance to make. Wether we like it or not it is the customers perogative to make that decision on what he percieves wether it is right or wrong. That is the point I am making. If it is simply a hobby then why on earth make out that you are something you are not ???? If he is trying to make a living though he could be doing even better in my opinion. I have been thinking about buying a Grovana Coral Reef but it will not be coming from RLT I am afraid no matter how nice a guy he really happens to be. I have no inclination to go back now I am afraid.

I think okwhynot is proud of being British and has a mild thing about handbags, for some reason. Still… UB

They are quite nice if not just a little pricey. I am not knocking them for that though as they do seem to use quality parts.

For me now I guess the magic price point is between £150 and £200. The reason being is I think I am bordering on starting to collect watches. Others buy say a Brietling or Rolex and 12 months later they sell it so they can then buy something else. That is not for me. Unlike some people I cannot part with something once I have bought it. I would end up missing it and regreting the sale lol. So to keep buying this seems like a good price point to start at. That way 3 or 4 watches a year could be bought without losing too much sleep. Of course you could save the money and get yourself a really nice watch every year or so but I think I am teetering on starting to build a collection. I dont know if I have the patience to get an Omega one year and then start to save up again to get the likes of a Breitling a couple of years later. I suppose I could do that and when I am 70 I would have quite a nice selection but life is too short. I am now starting to realise that there are many nice watches out there for under £200 just waiting to be bought.

mmmm decisions decisions.

Its a great price range 150 to 200 nice an affordable and plenty of choice and I don't worry about wearing the watches in this price range, the only thing is I quite fancy the eberhard traversetolo vitre and thats big money, if my £30 quid Elgin haddened of broke I would never have started looking ahhhhh now I'm a watch collector. :ka:

You're right about that price range. Like Terminator 2, I always buy nice things but never sell them off, and I guess my relatives will have a nice find here and there when I shuffle off... However, temptation always seems to occur with me when I've got a bit of cash in my pocket, and spotting the Hamilton for Daz has done just that. (other post) So I'm afraid the price range is not too well fixed... UB :-"

Ok so I lied about the "for the last time on this topic" bit .

Regarding the above mention of Atlantic ,
I have an art deco Worldmaster with a guilloche face and gilt ETA 2824-2 movement and was lucky enough to buy it on e-bay for about eighty pounds. It is indeed a beautiful timepiece and
my only partial gripe is that it is the loudest watch I own ,the movement is held in place
with four metal clasps (not sure of correct terminology) and unlike other automatics the movement can be heard a few feet away. As I said this is only a partial gripe as it is often worn and much appreciated.

The Air Commando seems good value at under $500

Since you posted this, I keep going back to this site to check out the Maestro 3136. Has anyone had any experience with this brand? All in all the specs don't look bad. I know it is a young company, but so is CWL.
