Not a Studio Underdog Watch.

Post by JAFO »

I saw this Proxima 1717 watch on Ali X.
£200 incl VAT which is quite a bit cheaper than the original.

I'm tempted. :D

This is a screenshot. I can't see a way to edit it on my phone.
Now I found a way to download just the image

I’m assuming these are pretty popular currently as Studio Underd0g posted about finally being repped with these as a badge of honor.

There's the watermelon "homage", and a pretty poor "avocado" effort. I can see the watermelon one selling.

They are popular & there are more fruits, at least I've also seen pineapple, banana and even bubble tea.

I can't see any other designs, even searching specifically for "pineapple watch"

I did see a Steeldive with a great wave dial, and a GIOIO version of the Rolex "bubbles" dial in 3 sizes (31,36,41mm) for £73.00. (Is that the one you meant @hsukirk

I saw them in person while I was in China last Nov.

Truth to be told, a lot of things in China cannot be searched via Google, Youtube or FB.

Does anyone own one of the Studio Underdogs? I’ve always been intrigued as to what they’re like in person.

I tried one on at a watch fair. Nice, but 38.5mm is slightly small for me.

I am also not sure about paying £500 or so when you can get the same movement for less on Ali X, although not with the same fancy colours. These new Ali X colours change that somewhat.

I nearly bought one of the very first KS tranche though, but had never tried a KS before, and wasn't exactly sure how it all worked.

My company is very vigilant about cyber security, so I am suspicious of Ali X ( and tiktok as well).

Otherwise, I might be tempted.

Hilariously, I see that Studio Underd0g are going to “copy the copy” and produce either an avocado or guacamole version of the Chinese copy of their watches (if you see what I mean). The public get to vote on which of the two get produced.

I must say I find their light-hearted approach very refreshing.

I'm assuming you mean after the famous painting "Great Wave off Kanagawa" rather than "I saw a wave pattern dial and I thought it was great": the dial is available to buy over tinternet certainly for various Seiko models: I'm prettyy sure I put one into a Seiko Sumo a few years back.

We've just missed/dodged an Aliexpress sale but a quick searcch of EBay cofirms easy availability.

Back up to the original post it's just another Chinese homage/knock-off watch which I just know I wouldn't wear. I tried the "See how I like it" logic in the past and for me that no longer works.

In the last AliX sale the Proxima dropped to around £150 (plus VAT). If it dropped to £120, I might have to buy it.

It's a big reduction against £500 plus for the studio underdog.

@tikkathree Yes, I meant the great wave of kanagawa.

In passing I did buy a Sugess 1963 chronograph, which I had been following at higher prices, and which had dropped to under £90, plus VAT. Manual wind with display case back.
