Just curious, when I lived in Sydney, (1967-1972) a "thumbs up" sign was considered rude, certainly at my school! I remember that my Dad used to give me the thumbs up all the time, yet when I did it to a teacher once at school, I was sent to the Headmaster's office for a telling off! Is it still considered to be a rude sign?

Must have been a Sydney thing. Further north it's always been a positive sign. The upright middle finger, which is considered rude worldwide, used to be two fingers (index and middle), kind of like a reversed V for victory sign. It morphed into the more universal middle finger about thirty years ago, but thumbs up was always good

Right. Thanks. The two fingers sign (reversed V for Victory) is still used over here. Usually with the question- "Are these yours?".
