maybe they did in iceland! its made from ash from the icelandic volcano that lost the UK £490 million or so when it errupted. not many of these about - straight on it looks smooth as a normal dial, sideways like this though...
FYI i think your Seiko is legit, the case shape is right for the era and i've seen it with a blue dial and red numbers just not a grey one but i dont think it could be from another model just rarer, See here:

Thankyou for the info and link, yes that is the closet I have seen! I think the dial is black on mine or very dark charcoal, photo does not show true colour. I have the original strap which fits my partner (she wears it the most), it has a modified fossil strap on it at the moment as it was the only thing I had here that fitted me. I have another seiko 5 incoming from a relative (free).
