The internal bezel which is the 360 degrees of a compass with 8 markers for North, Northeast, East and so on.
Intended to be used with the watch hands and in alignment with the sun to provide the Alpinist with a travelling compass which would not be affected by proximity to ferrous rocks. Apparently.
