Re: My Wife told me to buy a Rolex
Great post! As always, it is fun to come along on the watch journey so keep us all informed. Of those you have seen, my personal favourite is the gmt master but then I am slightly biased! However, I really do get an enormous amount of pleasure from it. Enjoy the decision making.

The Anthracite apart I would have been very happy to have taken any one of those home.
I was somewhat pleased for myself though that the biggest smile on my face was reserved for the 14060M.
You're going to have a great time choosing that's for sure!

That GMT coke is soo cool. Explorer looks quite big on you? Have you considered the older 40mm one?

Richard, I am really starting to lean towards this one. I didn't realize it was still just 40mm wide until recently and the ceramic bezel, new bracelet and technical features of the movement are quite positive features compared to older models. It seems the best of both worlds whereas the new Explorer II is too large. The green GMT hand is really growing on me too.Berkshire wrote:I can't add anymore to what Mark has said except consider a watch for 'all seasons', the GMT Master ii.
Plus the updated GMT II with ceramic bezel's were released a couple years ago and I've spotted a few lightly used ones for sale in Canada for much cheaper than at an AD.
Still on the Rolex quest...

Jeff I have no regrets, in my opinion it's the best to date. I hope this helps you to make up your mind.

Great post & great photos. I really enjoy reading the thought process. It is clear that when you settle on one it will be the right choice. Keep us posted!
Re: My Wife told me to buy a Rolex
How about an Explorer 1? Just a thought.
Can I suggest you don't buy one from a pawnbrokers though. I popped in one at the weekend and asked to try a 2nd-hand Rolex. There were 2 ladies in the shop - one said "certainly sir" and went to fetch the watch. The other walked over to the door, shut it, and stood by it with her hand on the lock. (Or maybe it's just me?!)

Not an uncommon practice when high end items come out of a case. It is meant to discourage the grab and run thieves.atnits wrote:How about an Explorer 1? Just a thought.

Re: My Wife told me to buy a Rolex
Yeah, I am not going to buy a Rolex from a pawn shop.. Lol. Although I did look at some to check style and sizes since it is easy to find older models there.
I am trying to decide to buy brand new from an AD or via a dealer in another province at some 30% discount since there would be no sales tax too. Since this is a big and probably once in a lifetime purchase I am leaning towards eliminating as much risk as possible and purchasing from a local AD. They may offer a slight discount but I have not asked yet. No matter how reliable an online source is there is something to be said for the entire experience of going to a store and having confidence that all is genuine, and that they are right there 15 minutes away ready to serve me if anything should be needed.
Some might say it is foolish to pay full retail but most of these people buy and sell Rolexes every few months it seems. Not really something I'm interested in doing.

I would definitely buy from an AD, enjoy the experience. Enjoy the glass of champagne whist they process your payment card. I know I did and even today I can't help but smile because I got a deal too. Have fun.

Just a quick update.. I have just paid for and acquired my first Rolex! I will have to take photos and will start a new thread later.. But for now I will just say I am super happy and can't quite believe it yet.

Many congratulations. A groundbreaking moment in any collection. Enjoy with pride. (And stop faffing, start taking pictures)
