How about a vintage Omega Speedmaster? A bit pricey and be wary of fakes.

This is the dream. It is definitely one of my very favorite styled watches. Don't think I can swing it for this first go around. But, there is a store window nearby with one displayed that I make sure to walk by every so often. =)

Speaking of dreams... I've been researching watches so much recently that they really have invaded my dreams. I dreamt that I was buying an automatic watch, and that it was presented to me by a sommelier swirling it in a wine glass in order to get the movement going... My professional background in the wine business and my newer interest in watches combining in interesting ways...

And for Dancematt

I am a big fan of Seiko. Loved that quartz chrono line that was mentioned. If I get something other than a diver for my graduation watch, I'll probably pick up a Seiko or Orient diver. If I DO get a diver for my grad watch, I'm gonna look again at that chrono for my next pick.

Sinn 556. €995, WR 20 Bar, 38,5mm diameter, but do not let that put you off. That is plenty big enough for a discreet watch. Basically a more reasonably priced Rolex Explorer, but not a copy/homage. Sinn is renowned for their quality. The 556 is one of the very few watches that actually will be appropriate in (almost) all settings.

Later you can get a divers watch for those times when you want a more sporty look and a bezel to time things.

Damasko DA 36. USD1150. 40mm diameter, WR 10 Bar. Great quality, almost impossible to scratch due to the use of something called ice hardened steel.

A bit more sporty than the Sinn, but still subdued enough to be very versatile.

Is that price with the bracelet, or strap?

That's what I was thinking, otherwise I would have asked where so that I could order immediately! :D

If it's going to be versatile, something like an Omega Aqua Terra would be the thing to go for. A dive watch as an all-rounder? Come on, gentlemen [-X

I'll do my usual against the grain, for me drive watches aren't the most versatile for all occasions. Now this fits the bill nicely IMO. The Smiths PRS-29b

The one on the right. 39mm, sapphire crystal, drilled lugs meaning easy to change straps, looks great on both leather and NATO... And a lovely Eta manual wind. Less than £450.

I own the smaller 36mm 29a on the left, it's my most worn watch of my collection(wearing it as I type), such a versatile little watch.

Good luck with your choice anyway.

Yes, absolutely. Chap I know was blackballed at the Athenaeum for wearing a bally swimming watch, what what! :cylinder:

Thank you for the non-dive options as well. I love the look of an all black dive watch, but was having trouble wrapping my mind around that as my go everywhere do everything. I know that is not an uncommon suggestion, though. I've read it and heard it in multiple places. Still is high on my list, just because I like the look and want one in my collection someday regardless.

I've been looking at Sinn and Damasko for a while, but always at watches with bezels. That Sinn 556 is going on the short list of considerations. If I could afford that Omega Aqua Terra this thread would be moot. It's pretty perfect. I am not familiar with Smiths. Will check them out.

An Omega Planet Ocean would work in my eyes...

Checking now at Gnomon I see that is with strap. 1860 with bracelet. Thanks for spotting the mistake.
