Markus Ruby

Post by dant100 »

Anyone know anything about Markus Ruby, they have a website, but it seems pretty basic and you cant seem to buy anything from it.

Anyway, I just saw a Markus Ruby skeleton automatic on ebay with 10 minutes left and a current bid of £24. Their website has the RRP at £245! Thought I'd chuck in a quick bid and ended up winning it for £40 plus $6.95 P&P. Not bad providing it turns up!!! The seller looks kosher and emailed straight away.
When it turns up I will take some photos and post, for now heres the one off the bay.

Ive been after a skeleton for a while and for the money I dont think I can go wrong. If it turns out to be a piece of s**t, then I havent lost much.

So many watches, so little time (and money!!!).

Hi Dan,

To be honest, it doesn't look much, not from a style point-of-view, but on basic design (the running-together of the words "waterresistant", for example), but like you say, it isn't asking much of your wallet, and should pad-out your display-case rather nicely. The RRP on the manufacturer's site can be taken with a barrel of salt, as is the case with many E-bay seller's recommendations, but what the hell... if nothing else, you're paying (not very much) for an education in watch-buying. No bad thing, IMO.

I'm always curious about non-mainstream watches. Let us know how it pans-out, eh?

regards,

Ivor.

Not my kind of watch, but if you can score it for 24 P. that's rather cheap.

Evening...
Well K.Dos, if you like the design and you are happy with what you are buying then i would say go ahead and get one. Personally i don't like it, but then there a watches that cost several thousand pounds that look like they were designed by a blind chimpanzee (apologies to any apes reading!).
If indeed it does turn out to look like cheap tat in the flesh,or lasts 5 minutes before disintegrating then it won't have cost much to have found out!
If you do buy one then stick your thoughts on the forum...
Cheers

Welcome to the "Asylum" K.Dos.

I guess I would say if you like the design and don't mind cheap , go for it, Sort of like buying a replica imo. I really can't argue about the price point though. It appears they claim to be a swiss movement, but I am not 100% on that. personally I would group them with Steinhausen and Stauer but the price seems better. Buyer beware.

Dan, you seem to be approaching the purchase with the right frame of mind. Let us know how it turns out. Fortunately it is not a large investment.

Well for £40 it must be worth it. I would like to see some more photos of the mechanism which I think is Russian but with nice bits added. Good buy and a well designed face.

Coincidentally, I've just ordered (Friday) a handwound skeleton from this firm for a pretty experimental £24 on the 'Bay, so I'll let you know what it's like..If it turns up ok...UB.. :)

I put in a bid of $70 USD This seller seems to have a few of them going for that price. That makes me think the MRP of $399 is a scam. shipping is $40 to Canada (that sucks). Pretty expensive experiment if you ask me. But what little I have been able to find on Markus Ruby says they are decent watches. The lack of numbers for the Chronograph feature seems a bit odd..
well I guess I have to wait and see now

I've no doubt that the RRPs are quite untrue, and it may be that carriage charges are being used as an extra income - outlawed here. I've ordered mine from a UK dealer at £24 (48 dollars) and recorded postal delivery of £3.99 (about 8 dollars). We'll see; if all is well I'll publish dealer details and tell you what the watch is like. I'm not expecting too much but any mechanical device is fascinating and the apparent risk is not very high...recommended retail price used to only work effectively for conventional retail with advertised percentage price cuts, but non-specific price charging/discounting is not allowed in the UK, although some retailers manage to find loopholes with which to tempt any of us who are gullible. Also claims that suggest the maker uses movements with Swiss names is unlikely to be proven, and I am not holding my breath for any of that. If it arrives and if it ticks and if it keeps time - well then it's ok, isn't it?.. ...UB

Dan,
This movement, I believe, is based on the Seiko 5 (7S26). Look at the paw on the self winding mec.
